Why are Americans "stuck on" BAND-AID(R) Brand? Because for 75 years, moms have counted on the BAND-AID(R) Brand, and of course kisses, to help make billions of boo-boos better. Before Johnson & Johnson made product history with the introduction of the first commercial adhesive bandage, the dressing of a wound was usually a two-person job. The general practice was to tear off to pull off by violence; to strip. See also: Tear a strip of white cloth from a "rag-bag"; tear or cut a portion of the strip down the middle to provide two ends for tying; then laboriously wrap the bandage around the injury and tie a knot. That all changed in 1920 when Johnson & Johnson employee Earl Dickson created the first ready-to-use bandage so that his wife could treat herself following her numerous kitchen mishaps. Encouraged by a co-worker to tell his boss about this invention, Dickson's idea was so well received that in 1921, Johnson & Johnson began manufacturing the product under the BAND-AID(R) Brand trademark. The original product was an unwieldy 18-inches long and the user had to snip off Verb 1. snip off - sever or remove by pinching or snipping; "nip off the flowers" clip, nip off, snip, nip cut - separate with or as if with an instrument; "Cut the rope" pieces to the desired size when needed. Today, the product comes in all shapes and sizes, from extra large for knees and elbows to those that fit on fingertips "Fingertips" is a 1963 number-one hit single recorded live by "Little" Stevie Wonder for Motown's Tamla label. Wonder's first hit single, "Fingertips" was the first live, non-studio recording to reach number-one on the Billboard Pop Singles chart in the United States. . "Early sales of the product were slow," says Vivian Wang, product director, BAND-AID(R) Brand. "There was no hint that it would go on to become one of the most popular and trusted consumer products of all time." Over the past 75 years, BAND-AID(R) Brand has been a leader in product and packaging improvements, many of them pioneering achievements in the adhesive bandage category. For example, in 1924, Johnson & Johnson took the lead in developing automatic machinery for producing adhesive bandages. In 1928, the company added aeration aeration /aer·a·tion/ (ar-a´shun) 1. the exchange of carbon dioxide for oxygen by the blood in the lungs. 2. the charging of a liquid with air or gas. aer·a·tion n. holes to the pad to let air circulate around the cut or scratch to promote better healing. Johnson & Johnson was at the forefront of perfecting the technique of sterilizing bandages in the package. The brand was the first to use the flat, hinged-top metal can for easy opening and to protect the contents from dirt and wet hands. "The BAND-AID(R) Brand has become synonymous with synonymous with adjective equivalent to, the same as, identical to, similar to, identified with, equal to, tantamount to, interchangeable with, one and the same as protection," says Wang. "People think of our product when they need to protect a wound." To celebrate the 75th anniversary, Johnson & Johnson Consumer Products Inc. is offering specially marked boxes of BAND-AID(R) Brand Adhesive Bandages at a discount price.
