This weekend band members hope to win their fourth consecutive championship at a prestigious band competition in which about 60 high schools from across Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Known as the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association's Marching Field Show Championships, the annual event only takes marching bands that have scored highest rankings in competitions this fall in their divisions, which are based on size.

About 10 bands in each of the six divisions will perform shows, about seven to 12 minutes each, and are judged on music and general effect, which includes emotions elicited from the performances.

At Hart High on Wednesday morning, the 100-member marching band practiced its moves on the football field, a two-hour daily ritual. Rows of tubas

The band's skit takes the audience through a journey of books, with movements, props and, of course, music that together bring a sequence of stories to life. It's show starts with students walking through a prop door and then after an introduction, it leads to fairy tales This is a list of fairy tales, the dates of their earliest known printed version, the author and, if known, the collection of tales in which it was published. It should be noted, however, that not all stories listed below would be categorized as fairy tales by a strict definition  and adventure stories.

``Technique, technique, technique, technique,'' said band director Anthony Bailey Anthony Bailey is a British author. Born in 1933 in Portsmouth, Hampshire, United Kingdom, he was evacuated to Dayton, Ohio, in 1940 during World War II. For many years he was a writer for the New Yorker Magazine.  over a microphone to band members as they marched around the field. ``It's not where you are going, but how you are getting there.''

Winning this competition is especially important to seniors in the band, who'd like to graduate with the reputation of four straight years of championships.

``We're kind of the underdogs,'' said Katie Lookholder, a drum captain who has played with the band for four years. ``We're the smaller band that beats out the bigger bands.''

Students said they had strong mentors when they first joined the band as freshmen and those role models have contributed to their success.

But with nearly one-quarter of the members graduating this spring, some are concerned about the marching band's future. They want the tradition to continue.

Adrian Trujillo encourages others to give it a try. Still, when he first joined marching band four years ago, he wasn't sure it was for him. But after playing in a few competitions, he was completely hooked.

Outside of school, the high school senior records music and has a band. Music is such a part of his life that now the 17-year-old plans to study the subject in college.

Shannon Canchola had a similar story. She was not excited about being in the band as a freshman but after her first season of playing flute, she saw things differently. She has stayed with it all through high school and said she wouldn't change a thing.

``I hated band the first day. I wanted to be a cheerleader,'' Canchola said. ``But then things started changing. I've been doing it all four years.''
