BAND HEATS UP IN DAY PRACTICE; HART HIGH SQUAD GETS IN TUNE FOR FALL.

 members are feeling the heat - literally - as they practice for the 1997-98 season.

The musicians are in the middle of a two-week practice session, rehearsing the songs and practicing the choreography they'll perform during the Indians' football games this fall.

Brandi Gunther, 14, said she had heard about the rigors of so-called Hell Week while attending Placerita Junior High School. Now that she's at Hart, she's understands how the practice session got its name.

``It's really been just that,'' Gunther said. ``It's a lot of pressure and I try to keep drinking water drinking water

, musicians practice from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, stopping only for lunch and two 20-minute breaks. The band spends much of the day in the heat and humidity of the football field, moving into the school's band room when temperatures get unbearable.

Loeb, who has worked with Grammy Award-winning artists Whitney Houston and Brandy, has been playing and teaching music for 14 years.

``The students have a lot of energy and are very dedicated,'' Loeb said. ``They have a lot to look forward to.''

In addition to Indians' football games, including homecoming Sept. 26, the band is preparing for the Nov. 1 Rampage competition, which will pit Hart against several other Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  schools.

Johnson and Loeb hope to raise enough money during the competition to help the band fulfill a commitment at Disney World in Orlando, Fla., in the spring. ``That's what this is all about,'' Loeb said. ``The kids want to perform. They work hard and they want to go to Disney.''
