day turned sweet for the school's 131 band members and their parents who launched the group's largest fund-raiser back in September and assembled to reap its rewards.

``It was great. This kind of fund-raiser comes along once in a generation,'' said band director Larry Elginer. ``To reap such a large amount for that, and it comes at a time when we need a lot of money for extra equipment and uniforms.''

Representatives from the Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  Water Co., Metropolitan Water District and Cooperative Technologies Services International handed over a check for $15,750 to band members and their boosters, who gave away 1,050 low-flush toilets in September to conservation-minded residents.

``The students worked very hard and their involvement and enthusiasm made it a success,'' said parent and booster Booster - A data-parallel language.

member Barry Watters. ``They're a great bunch of kids.''

Elginer said the influx of freshmen students from area schools has increased the band's need for fund-raising activities to help meet their $80,000 budget.

The need for more uniforms and equipment followed the Simi Valley Unified School District's plan to incorporate ninth-graders onto the high school campuses, which traditionally had only 10th- through 12th-graders.

The money will be used to buy uniforms, which cost about $400 a piece. The cost of instrument repairs vary - last year, for instance, it cost $300 to repair a student's xylophone xylophone (zī`ləfōn) [Gr.,=wood sound], musical instrument having graduated wooden slabs that are struck by the player with small, hard mallets. The slabs are usually arranged like a keyboard, and the range varies from two to four octaves.  and $265 to fix a saxophone saxophone, musical instrument invented in the 1840s by Adolphe Sax. Although it uses the single reed of the clarinet family, it has a conical tube and is made of metal. .

Additional band expenses this year include renting an extra bus for competition travel, which costs anywhere from $2,000 to $3,000 per trip.

``We have four buses instead of three now and two 24-foot trucks to haul instruments for competition,'' said parent Herman Conant.

Students like 17-year-old Steve Eklund said the time and energy put forth by the group made the fund-raiser worthwhile.
