Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  on Thursday, setting the stage for a balmy, sun-drenched weekend, forecasters said.

Utility crews and firefighters spent the day contending with the aftermath of Wednesday's windstorm wind·storm

But by 5:30 p.m. Thursday, the National Weather Service had canceled its high-wind advisory for the mountain areas of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County, said meteorologist Bruce Rockwell.

``It's going to be a little breezy, especially in the early morning hours but nothing like (Wednesday),'' Rockwell said of the 20 to 30 mph winds possible today below passes and canyons.

Otherwise, Rockwell said, the forecast through the weekend calls for temperatures in the day about 3 degrees above normal for this time of year. At night, temperatures in the 40s, about 4 to 5 degrees below normal, are forecast.

In Glendale, firefighters Thursday mopped up a brush fire that broke out at the height of the windstorm the day before. About 100 hillside acres were burned.

``The winds played a big factor by pushing the fire in the early stages,'' said Capt. Eric Indermill of the Glendale Fire Department. No injuries were reported and no structures were lost, although some homes were briefly threatened.

Downed wires sparked the fire, Indermill said.
