The hot air balloon is the oldest successful human-carrying flight technology, dating back to its invention by the Montgolfier brothers in Annonay,
 burst into flames.

Other passengers were seen leaping 40ft from the burning basket with their clothes ablaze.

It erupted into flames seconds after the balloon took off from a fairground in western Canada, police said yesterday.

The mother and daughter had been reported missing but their charred bodies were later discovered.

 relatives on the ground watched as the dream trip of a lifetime turned into a nightmare.

The commercially-operated balloon had taken off from Surrey, near Vancouver, British Columbia, on Friday night.

A witness said: "The thing went up about 400 feet in the air at which point it melted enough of the balloon - it collapsed.

"The basket was basically a fireball fireball, very bright meteor leaving a trail in the sky that can remain visible for several minutes; often a distinct sound, perhaps caused by very low frequency radio waves, is associated with it. . It just dropped like a stone.

"I'm just thinking, 'Oh geez geez

Perry Kendall, who also saw the tragedy, said: "It was horrifying just looking at people screaming and jumping out of there.

"Some of them had fire on their clothes." All those injured were taken to local hospitals with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

In 1920 the name was changed to the present title.  officer Roger Morrow said something caught fire as the balloon rose, sending up a plume of smoke that could be seen for miles.

Witnesses said propane tanks from the balloon fell on a mobile home park setting fire to three trailers and several vehicles.

A spokesman for the balloon firm said: "The company deeply regrets the incident and inconvenience to those people being displaced."
