Almost 500 people filled the new Antelope Valley Fairground's Poppy poppy, common name for some members of the Papaveraceae, a family composed chiefly of herbs of the Northern Hemisphere having a characteristic milky or colored sap.  Pavilion for the event, which featured live entertainment, a silent auction, live auction and catered dinner.

The live auction brought in $60,000, the silent auction $23,000 and a special auction of tiles painted by children in art therapy sessions brought in $20,000.

Four of the large tiles will occupy a space in the lobby of a new Children's Center building to be built at Jackman Avenue and 10th Street West in Lancaster.

One of the tiles was purchased for $9,000 and another one was purchased in memory of Donald Fischer Fi·scher , Hans 1881-1945.

The money will be used to make up the difference between what the grant money covers and what the center needs to accommodate more children.

``This gives us a little bit extra money to do some extra things for the children,'' said Norris. ``The grant money covers the basics, but if you have more children that you want to put into the program, you can't until the next cycle comes around.''

The center was recently approved for a $1.5 million loan and officials hope to break ground on its new 15,000-square-foot building in April. The current facility is less than half that size.
