BALL CORPORATION EXPECTS TO REPORT LOWER THIRD QUARTER EARNINGS

MUNCIE, Ind., Oct. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Ball Corporation (NYSE: BLL) said preliminary results indicate that third quarter earnings per share are expected to be significantly below analysts' mean estimates of 63 cents as reported by First Call. In 1992 Ball reported third quarter earnings per share from continuing operations of 76 cents.
The reduction in earnings is attributable to continuing underperformance in the company's glass and aerospace operations, plus a non-cash provision taken primarily to reduce certain inventories to net realizable value. Included are inventories related to low-light level technology products and the visual image generator product line. Quarterly results will also be reduced by an adjustment to income taxes to comply with the 1993 Tax Act.
Management expects to report third quarter results the week of October 18-22. Ball Corporation manufactures metal and glass containers for the beverage and food industries and provides aerospace systems and professional services to government and commercial customers.
