BALDWIN MORE LIKE CAN'T-WIN ANOTHER BAD OUTING COSTLY FOR DODGERS ST. LOUIS 6, DODGERS 5.

ST. LOUIS - James Baldwin Noun 1. James Baldwin - United States author who was an outspoken critic of racism (1924-1987)
Baldwin, James Arthur Baldwin
was pennant-race tested and the Dodgers needed a starter. So, more than a month ago, they traded for him. But as the intensity of the stretch drive increases and scoreboard watching turns into an obsession, Baldwin has done nothing but hurt the Dodgers' chances.

Baldwin was roughed up for the third consecutive start Saturday, gone after yielding five runs in four innings as the Dodgers dropped out of the wild-card lead with a 6-5 loss to St. Louis at Busch Stadium This article is about the current sports venue in St. Louis, Missouri that opened in 2006. L.A. fell two games behind In sports, the phrase games behind, often abbreviated as GB in tables, is a common way to reflect the gap between a leading team and another team in a sports league, conference, or division.  Arizona in the NL West and dropped into third place behind the Giants.

Cardinals manager Tony La Russa tied a nine-inning major-league record by using nine pitchers, including four in the ninth inning, but it worked to push St. Louis within a half-game of the Dodgers in the wild card.

``I'll get back to where I need to be,'' Baldwin said. ``I promise you that.''

Baldwin, pitching on three days' rest, allowed 10 hits and five runs - all in the the fourth inning - and walked two in his shortest outing as a Dodger.

He is 0-3 with a 9.00 ERA in his last three starts. He's allowed 15 runs and 30 hits in 15 innings, and opponents are batting .429 against him. In those games, the Dodgers twice have trailed 4-0 after two innings and were behind the Cardinals 5-2 after four innings Saturday.

Since beginning his Dodgers career with two strong starts, Baldwin is 1-4 with a 6.69 ERA in his last six turns. The Dodgers are 2-6 in his eight starts, but even more alarming is they might not have any other pitching options as the pennant race tightens.

Not even Shawn Green Shawn David Green (born November 10, 1972, in Des Plaines, Illinois) is a 6' 4" left-handed Major League Baseball player. Green is the starting right fielder for the New York Mets.[1]

Green was a 1st round draft pick, and has been a two-time major league All-Star.
could bail him out. Green extended his franchise-record, single-season home run mark with a two-run blast to center field in the third inning off starter Alan Benes Alan Paul Benes, born on January 21, 1972 in Evansville, Indiana, was a Major League Baseball pitcher who pitched for three teams over the course of eight seasons. He began his major league career in 1995, pitching in three games for the St. Louis Cardinals.  (2-0), his 46th of the season.

St. Louis had runners in scoring position In the sport of baseball, a baserunner is said to be in scoring position when he is on second or third base. The distinction between being on first base and second or third base is that a runner on first can usually only score if the batter hits an extra base hit, while a runner on  in each of Baldwin's innings, but they didn't break through until the fourth. Jim Edmonds led off with a solo homer and rookie Albert Pujols capped the inning with a two-run single as the Cardinals took a 5-2 lead.

``I just feel right now my location is the key and I'm not hitting my spots,'' said Baldwin, who is 2-4 with a 5.08 ERA with the Dodgers. ``Any time you're missing your location, guys are going to make you pay for it. I'll definitely get back to where I was. I'm just going through a tough time right now.''

The burden Baldwin's performance placed on the rest of the team was too much to overcome, though opportunities existed.

Mark Grudzielanek's two-run homer in the ninth inning pulled the Dodgers within 6-5 with two out. Green singled, the 12th time he's reached base in 15 plate appearances, to bring Gary Sheffield to bat.

Sheffield, who struck out with the bases loaded and the Cardinals leading 5-3 to end the seventh, grounded into a fielder's choice against Gene Stechschulte.

``Anything close, I'm trying to drive it. I'm not going up there to walk,'' said Sheffield, who went 0 for 5 and is hitless in his last 10 at-bats. ``I'm just trying to drive the ball. They just made some good pitches. I felt fine. I wanted the ball in certain areas, and sometimes they're just as stubborn and not give it to you. You have to be a better hitter.''
