 Sunday began trying to figure out what caused a house's balcony to collapse during a party, killing one person and injuring several others.

More than a dozen people were on the wooden deck that fell three stories Saturday night, authorities said. Witnesses described hearing the wood crack followed by a loud rumble as the structure plunged to the ground.

"I've never seen anything like it. There were bodies all over the place," said Mark Nicols, who was standing in a nearby garage when the structure collapsed.
