Things looked good when it was tied after three quarters.

Twenty-three fourth-quarter Bakersfield points later, there would be no Canyons comeback Comeback

Canyons found out what everyone else who has played here knows: It's really hard to beat the Renegades at Memorial Stadium.

Too many mistakes did in the Cougars, as Bakersfield pulled away for a 43-20 Western State Conference Northern Division victory.

The difference, linebacker Sean Cogswell said, was the number of mistakes.

``Against Hancock, we hardly made any mistakes and we beat them,'' he said.

And all the major errors came in the fourth quarter, when the Cougars (7-2, 4-1) usually are their most poised.

But then Kevin Carrasco threw an interception that Greg Chapman returned 17 yards for a score and a 27-20 lead. It was the fourth straight game the Renegades (6-2, 4-0) returned an interception for a touchdown.

Unfortunately for Canyons, there was more. Carrasco, who didn't get enough protection throughout the game, got sacked sack 1

Bakersfield responded with a touchdown drive of its own. It was typical Renegades: 11 plays, 79 yards, 5:40. Jeff Dover passed to Rob Hedlund from 9 yards away for the score.

Back came the Cougars with a Heloyt Cervantes 43-yard field goal and a 10-7 first-quarter lead.

After Carrasco was intercepted, Bakersfield put together an 11-play, 46-yard drive that ate up 6:12. Jermaine Ervin ran in from 3 yards for a 13-10 lead.
