The number of possible City Council candidates for the April 11 election swelled to 13 late Tuesday, when Saugus resident Timothy Michael Shanklin took out nomination papers from the City Clerk's Office, a city official said. By late Wednesday afternoon, Cameron Smyth Cameron Smyth is a Republican who has represented Califoria's 38th Assembly district since December of 2006. He succeeded Keith Richman who was term limited. Prior to being elected to the state legislature, Assemblyman Smyth served on the Santa Clarita City Council, where he , 28, deputy chief of staff to state Sen. W.J. ``Pete'' Knight, R-Palmdale, remained the only candidate who had returned nomination papers. To be listed on the April 11 ballot, candidates must submit at least 20 and no more than 30 nominating signatures of registered voters by Friday. The deadline will be extended to Jan. 19 if no incumbents file. Councilwomen Jill Klajic and Jan Heidt, whose nonpartisan, four-year terms end in April, have announced they will not seek re-election. The following residents have taken out candidacy papers: Dennis Conn, 52, a local cable television talk-show personality; Eileen Connolly, 45, a 10-year Saugus school board member; Dennis Farnham, 55, a retired Los Angeles Police Department "LAPD" and "L.A.P.D." redirect here.
