Prosecutors said they believe Zavala raped two women in the same neighborhood near the Thousand Oaks Civics civics, branch of learning that treats of the relationship between citizens and their society and state, originally called civil government. ``The alleged crimes are very serious and carry a potential life sentence,'' said deputy district attorney Patty Murphy.

Prosecutors requested time to investigate the crimes as well as reports that Zavala has twice been deported to Mexico and was wanted on two drug charges.

Officials say they believe Zavala is responsible for a series of violent attacks that terrorized his Thousand Oaks neighbors and prompted police to dispatch mounted officers and organize a special surveillance of his home.

The first attack occurred on Jan. 25, when a man matching Zavala's description broke into a motor home on Comanche Avenue and choked and raped a 64-year-old woman, police said. A month later, an assailant shattered shat·ter
