BAE Systems Receives U.S. Marine Corps Order for 1,320 Headborne Energy Analysis and Diagnostic Systems.

PHOENIX -- BAE Systems BAE Systems

British manufacturer of aircraft, missiles, avionics, naval vessels, and other aerospace and defense products. BAE Systems was formed (1999) from the merger of British Aerospace (BAe) with Marconi Electronic Systems.
has received an order from the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) for 1,320 Headborne Energy Analysis and Diagnostic Systems (HEADS), a sensor system placed inside helmets that will help scientists analyze and understand the forces that Marines sustain during impact and blast events that could lead to brain injury.

Data collected from HEADS will be used to build better protective systems and improve the diagnosis and treatment of Mild Traumatic Brain Injury mild traumatic brain injury,
n disruption of brain function by trauma characterized by but not limited to a loss of consciousness, memory loss surrounding the trauma, confusion during the incident, loss of consciousness for no more than thirty minutes,
.

, BAE Systems' director of business development for Individual Equipment. "This system will allow the USMC to better understand the forces individuals are exposed to, allowing for targeted development of protective equipment."

HEADS incorporates state-of-the-art accelerometer accelerometer

and pressure sensor technology that is capable of detecting and recording the forces sustained by Marines during combat operations. Mounted to the inside of the helmet shell, the system is extremely small and lightweight, and compatible with the USMC Lightweight Helmet, Advanced Combat Helmet and the Combat Vehicle Crewman helmets. The system is not noticeable to the wearer and does not interfere with additional helmet-mounted equipment such as goggles goggles,

HEADS production will be completed at BAE Systems' Individual Equipment facilities in Jessup, Pennsylvania, and Phoenix, Arizona, with a scheduled completion date of August 2008. The company employs more than 1,000 employees at these facilities. BAE Systems has already delivered 5,500 sensors to the armed forces.
