It's been a tough week for the Raiders, who in a span of three days found out that tailback tail·back

Emmanuel Evans is still not ready to play, and also that as many as four of their other main players may also be lost for tonight's 7 p.m. game against visiting West L.A. College.

Evans strained a ligament ligament (lĭg`əmənt), strong band of white fibrous connective tissue that joins bones to other bones or to cartilage in the joint areas. In his absence, the Raiders struggled to establish any kind of running game in their season-opening 49-37 loss to Chaffey. The two backs who will carry the load again tonight, Aaron Kleefisch and Bryant Phipps, combined for 72 yards last week.

``We're not entirely sure when we're getting (Evans) back,'' coach Jim Bittner said. ``He might have to miss next week too, but the doctors said it wasn't serious enough to have an MRI 1. (application) MRI - Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

, he just needs to rest it.''

Without Evans, the offensive burden falls to quarterback Farhaad Azimi, who played well last week in the face of a tough Chaffey defensive front.

``Farhaad was certainly the bright spot last week,'' Bittner said. ``He showed some good mobility back there and got the offense going when we were struggling a little bit.''

Azimi completed 20 of 33 attempts for 234 yards and two touchdowns, but this week the task could become even more difficult.

Receiver Shayne Sobel, who caught 10 passes for 127 yards and two touchdowns, partially separated his shoulder in the first half last week but continued to play. Sobel's ability to play tonight will likely be a game-time decision.

``He was able to play in the second half, but as the game went on it got colder and colder, and (the shoulder) started to stiffen stiff·en

 up on him,'' Bittner said.

The bad news continued on the practice field. Offensive lineman Lineman or linesman may refer to:

Russ Ortiz Russell Reid Ortiz (born June 5, 1974 in Encino, California), is a Major League baseball pitcher for the San Francisco Giants. Before returning to the Giants, Ortiz had previously played for the Arizona Diamondbacks, Baltimore Orioles and the Atlanta Braves.  and safety Andy Kroneberger (two interceptions last week) had minor knee injuries and defensive back Nick Lewis sprained his ankle in practice this week. The trio is expected to miss tonight's game.

``I really can't explain it,'' Bittner said. ``This is the most accident-prone team I've ever been around.''

That certainly won't help the Raiders tonight against a tough West L.A. team coming off a 28-21 victory over San Bernardino Valley The San Bernardino Valley is the hub of Southern California's Inland Empire. It is drained by the Santa Ana River. It is bordered on the north by the San Bernardino Mountains and the eastern San Gabriel Mountains, on the east by the San Jacinto Mountains, and on the south and west . Bittner expects an attacking defense and an overall physical game for the second consecutive week.

``We made a lot of mistakes last week, and we can't do that against a good team like Chaffey and we can't do it this week, either,'' Bittner said. ``But it's good for us to get some good tests early in the season.

``Some teams will go two or three weeks and only play bad teams, and think they have a pretty good team based on that. You find out more about your own team by playing the good teams early.''

Time: 7 p.m.

Records: Moorpark 0-1; West L.A. 1-0

Outlook: One more week like this, and coach Jim Bittner might have to consider open tryouts on the Moorpark campus. Bittner's top running back (Emmanuel Evans), offensive lineman (Russ Ortiz) and receiver (Shayne Sobel) could miss tonight's game, and West L.A.'s speedy, attacking defense won't help the Raiders.
