BAD BREAK FOR BRUINS' FOSTER INJURY TO FORCE RB OUT VS. CAL.

He is expected to return for the regular-season finale against USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code. .

Given the official prognosis of 2-6 weeks, how many other games Foster will miss with a broken bone in his right hand is anybody's guess. And that's just the way Bruins coach Bob Toledo Bob Toledo (born March 4, 1946, in San Jose, California) is an American football coach, recently hired as head coach at Tulane University. He is best-known as the thirteenth head coach at UCLA.  would like it.

``I probably made a mistake with the quarterback decision. I'm going to protect myself,'' Toledo said, referring to his estimate several weeks ago that Cory Paus would return before the Arizona State game. When Paus was cleared last week, Toledo bristled bris·tle

at the suggestion he was rushing Paus back too soon.

``We're just going to have to wait,'' Toledo added. ``Some guys heal at different rates. When it calcifies, he'll be ready to go.''

Jermaine Lewis and Akil Harris, who combined for 204 yards and three touchdowns on 30 carries against the Sun Devils, will share the duties.

Former walk-on Mike Vanis is behind them, though Toledo said if either Lewis or Harris are injured, he might turn to freshman Manuel White, a Valencia High graduate whom he is planning to redshirt.

as he was delivering a straight-arm. Foster's finger was twisted hard enough that it broke the bone, which runs from the wrist to the finger.

Foster sat out a few plays, then came back and carried the ball once for a 1-yard gain before leaving for good.

``I lost feeling in my hand,'' Foster said. ``I knew something was wrong. I knew I wouldn't be able to carry the ball. I can't get enough strength to hold the ball.''

It was another physical setback for Foster, who leads UCLA with 501 yards on 123 carries, a 4.1 average, with six touchdowns. He also is tied for third on the team with eight receptions.

Foster suffered a sprained knee his freshman season that cost him 1 1/2 games and limited his effectiveness for two more. Last season, he suffered a high ankle sprain ankle sprain Orthopedics A stretching of the ankle ligaments and/or muscles with swelling  keeping him to five carries over a five-game span. Still, he led the Bruins in rushing both seasons.

The junior from Tustin says he's already gotten any frustration over the injury out of his system. He had a cast put on Monday and will go through running and agility drills in an effort to remain fit.

Might he be ready in three weeks for undefeated Oregon State?

``Whatever the doctor says,'' Foster said.
