 Limited, one of the world's largest clearing houses, is using Borland(R) technology for Java(TM) as part of `NewBACS', a five-year technology renewal program to upgrade BACS' existing technology infrastructure from being a mainframe-based processing model to a Java application server and Internet protocol. Selecting Borland(R) JBuilder(TM) for migrating to Java(TM) is expected to enable the company to meet the growing demand for electronic payment services Electronic Payment Services (Chinese: 易辦事), commonly known as EPS, is the largest electronic payment system in Hong Kong, Macau and Shenzhen starting from 1985. The service is provided by EPS Company (Hong Kong) Limited. , including salary payments and direct debit collections.

BACS processed 3.5 billion payments in 2001 and is forecast to process 5 billion payments in 2006. Almost 32 million people currently use direct debit and 90 percent of salaries in the UK are paid using BACS. NewBACS will enable UK businesses to monitor the status of payments, receive reports, and maintain records online. It is also expected to reduce paper-based administration.

Borland JBuilder, the market leading development environment for Java(TM), is being used to upgrade BACS' existing technology infrastructure from a mainframe-based processing model to a Java application server and Internet protocol. The use of PKI (Public Key Infrastructure) A framework for creating a secure method for exchanging information based on public key cryptography. The foundation of a PKI is the certificate authority (CA), which issues digital certificates that authenticate the identity of  (Public Key Infrastructure) and modern encryption methods creates a multi-layered security platform that will build on BACS' enviable record of reliable, efficient, and secure payment processing.

Borland's Professional Services conducted training covering both JBuilder and the integration of Rational Rose(R), which BACS is using as its development modelling tool. Borland offers the Borland(R) Enterprise Studio for Java, which integrates JBuilder, Rational Rose(R), and Macromedia(R) Dreamweaver(R) MX tools.
