BACKUPS TOW THE O-LINE.

Byline: Jill Painter Staff Writer

PASADENA - UCLA's offensive line was customarily poised and proficient against Oregon State. The Bruins got in a rhythm early and gave quarterback Drew Olson Drew Olson (born April 6, 1983 in San Francisco, California) is a former starting quarterback for the University of California, Los Angeles football team, where he broke many of UCLA's passing records.  plenty of time to throw for a school-record six touchdown passes. Just another day in the trenches. Only the Bruins were missing two starters.

Offensive tackle Brian Abraham was sick and couldn't get out of bed Friday night. Sophomore Noah Sutherland started at strongside tackle and was impressive. Senior center Mike McCloskey suffered a strained right shoulder midway through the first quarter and didn't return, so backup Aaron Meyer played the rest of the way and played well.

``That's a testament to those two guys and how hard they practice,'' guard Robert Cleary said. ``Those guys were huge for us. I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

That was good news for UCLA. Abraham just played on the field-goal unit. McCloskey, who will have an MRI 1. (application) MRI - Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

But if Meyer plays like he did Saturday, it might take the sting out of McCloskey's injury. Cable pointed out that veteran Shannon Tevaga was on one side of the line and seniors Ed Blanton and Marcedes Lewis Marcedes Alexis Lewis (born May 19, 1984 in Los Alamitos, California) is an American football tight end who plays for the National Football League Jacksonville Jaguars. ``They did awesome,'' Olson said. ``That shows you what a great job Cable did preparing those guys.''

Sutherland made his first career start and made it a good one.

``We feel we have a lot of depth and that when people go down, we have people to step in and do the job,'' Sutherland said.

Maurice Drew was happy with the offensive line's production and had 120 yards rushing and 67 receiving. Drew was busy doing his usual thing, so it's no wonder if the casual observer didn't know anyone was missing.

``We practiced with Sutherland last week and he did a great job,'' Drew said. ``We ran behind him most of the time. Aaron stepped up. He messed up the first play, we got on him, and he played great the rest of the game.''
