BACK TO SCHOOL EVENTS FILL SEPTEMBER.

SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  -- Thousands of parents whose children attend school in the William S. Hart Union High School District will get up-close looks at their children's schools in the coming weeks and have the chance to meet their teachers.

Back to School Night events will start tonight and run through much of September.

Parents will follow their children's schedules and hear in each class what teachers expect as far as curriculum, homework and standards.

Some schools also use the evening to show off performing groups, introduce clubs and extracurricular activities and kick off the year for such special parent groups as bilingual advisory committees and Gifted and Talented Education programs.

This year's Back to School Night schedule is as follows:

Today: West Ranch High School West Ranch High School is a public high school in the community of Stevenson Ranch, Los Angeles County, California. Mr. Bob Vincent has been the school's principal ever since it opened in 2004. , 6:30 p.m. The evening will begin in the outdoor amphitheater with a presentation of the colors by the ROTC, the national anthem by the West Ranch Choir, and a welcome from the principal. Parents will then follow their child's schedule with 10- minute visits in each class. At 7:35 p.m. a live broadcast of West Ranch Television will be viewed in each classroom on campus.

Sept. 7: Sierra Vista Junior High, 7-8:35 p.m., classroom visits. Choral performance by Sierra Vista choir at 6:45 p.m. Parent meetings: Title I intervention meeting and dinner, 5:30 p.m., multipurpose mul·ti·pur·pose

Sept. 12: Sequoia Charter School, 6:30-8:15 p.m. The Parent Advisory Committee will host a light supper in the multipurpose room at 6:30 p.m., followed by a Back to School welcome and classroom visits.

Sept. 12: Golden Valley High School, will start at 6:15 p.m. with grade-level meetings for families to discuss various topics such as graduation requirements, four-year plans, high school exit exam, career interest surveys, scholarship information and college planning. The band, cheer squad, choir and drum line will perform, followed by classroom visits. An information booth in the quad will introduce the school's Family Center, to reach out to parents who can benefit from additional resources. During Back to School Day, parents are welcome to join their students for the first two periods of the minimum-day schedule, then join faculty and administration for a brief reception.

Sept. 12: Bowman High School Back to School Festival, 7-8:15 p.m. Includes a book fair, Astro jump, food and interactive sessions designed to give parents and guardians a flavor of the ``Bowman experience.'' Parents of English Learners will meet in Portable B at 6:15 p.m.; Gifted and Talented Education parents will meet in Portable A at 6:15 p.m.

Sept. 13: Rio Norte Junior High, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Classroom visits are scheduled following performances by the Rio Norte Advanced Band and a number from the upcoming ``Oklahoma'' production by the Drama Department. The PTSA will be on hand to encourage parents to join.

, 7 p.m. Tables will be set up for refreshments supporting individual groups on campus, and information from the Parent Advisory Council will be distributed. Opening performances at 6:45 p.m. will include the band and choir.

Sept. 14: Placerita Junior High, 6:45-8:15 p.m. Parents will travel to their children's classrooms at 10-minute intervals to learn expectations of teachers, including curriculum, grading policy, class projects, methods of communicating with teachers, and classroom management. . Parents of English Language Learners (PELL) will meet at 6:45 p.m. Students on the Trailblazers Team will conduct parent conferences.

Sept. 14: Rancho Pico Junior High, 6:30-8:30 p.m. The school choir will open the evening with music at 6:30 p.m. on the outdoor stage.

, classroom visitations from 6 to 7:50 p.m. The evening will begin at 5 p.m. with the Parent Teacher Student Association pizza sale and club/booster presentations on the outside basketball courts, and presentations by the school's performing groups at 5:30 p.m.

Sept. 20: Academy of the Canyons, 7 p.m. All parents are invited to attend a Parent Advisory Committee meeting starting immediately after Open House, at approximately 8 p.m.
