BACK FOR MORE QUARTZ HILL BOYS LOOK TO IMPROVE ON RUNNER-UP FINISH.

Byline: Erik Boal Special to the Daily News

The members of the Quartz Hill High boys' swim team walked to the parking lot at Belmont Plaza in Long Beach last season knowing they couldn't have performed any better in the Southern Section Div. IV championship meet.

The Rebels outscored Los Altos Los Altos (lôs ăl`tōs, lŏs), residential city (1990 pop. 26,303), Santa Clara co., W Calif.; inc. 1952. There is diversified light manufacturing.  of Hacienda Heights Ha·ci·en·da Heights

by 22 points in the 11 swimming events at the division final. But Los Altos had divers take four of the top eight places in their portion of the championships the day before, resulting in an insurmountable 57-point cushion over Quartz Hill entering the swimming part of the meet.

``I told them to walk out of (Belmont Plaza) with their heads held high because they actually won the swimming portion of the meet,'' said Quartz Hill coach Mark Thibault, whose team took runner-up honors to Los Altos 244-209. ``We just had no divers.''

Other coaches in Thibault's position might have panicked in the offseason and tried to incorporate a diving A DIV Associate of Divinity  program to complement the swim team to offset points from Bonita Bonita (Spanish and Portuguese for "beautiful") is the name of:

La Verne, which began as a citrus-processing center, now has varied manufacturing, including electronic components, apparel, hand , Charter Oak of Covina and Oaks Christian of Westlake Village. But Thibault believes Quartz Hill has enough returning talent in the pool - divers or not - to again contend for the division title.

``It is always our goal to do well at (the Southern Section final),'' said Thibault, who returns seniors Evan Lopez, Jimmy Rodriguez, Matt Smith and Viet Tran, along with sophomore Dan Tran. ``We have to handle our business in (Golden) league, but (the Div. IV meet) is always something to look at long term. We're marked men and women, so to speak.

``They've been there before and they know what to expect. Evan Lopez and Viet Tran are going to be serious point scorers and Matt Smith is an exceptional leader.''

Although Quartz Hill is an overwhelming favorite to win a sixth consecutive league title, Thibault is taking on the role of an ambassador for all the swim teams in the Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. ``Six years ago, nobody from the Antelope Valley qualified for (the Southern Section championships),'' Thibault said. ``But now all the programs are improving with the increase in club swimmers. It's making things within our league more competitive.''

At the top of that list of potential competition for Quartz Hill is Highland, which, despite graduating Bryce Bieri, returns Div. IV finalists William Bishop

``They're definitely up and coming,'' Thibault said. ``They have a great coaching staff (with Keith Otto and Judy Remy).''

Another team with aspirations of moving into the league's upper half is Lancaster. Under the guidance of first-year coach Amanda Orlando, the Eagles feature seniors Carl Forbes, Richy Parra and Shay shay

``We have a big team and I'm expecting us to come out really strong,'' said Orlando, who is guiding the Eagles, along with Brian Parks. ``We want to try to show that we belong with Quartz Hill.''

Antelope Valley, Knight, Littlerock and Palmdale will all try to send individual qualifiers to the Div. IV preliminaries May 10.
