BACHMAN ANNOUNCES CLIENT/SERVER ARCHITECTURE: MODEL DRIVEN DEVELOPMENT
WILL SUPPORT DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF DISTRIBUTED APPLICATIONS
BURLINGTON, Mass., Sept. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Bachman Information Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: BACH) today announced its architecture for bringing client/server computing capabilities to its customers. Bachman's efforts combine internal development initiatives, partnerships with leading software vendors, and support for popular third-party products to define and deliver CASE tool solutions for developing client/server applications.
To deliver the initial step in client/server development capabilities, Bachman today announced a technology and worldwide marketing agreement with Powersoft Corporation of Burlington, Mass., developer of PowerBuilder -- the leading object-oriented tool for building client/server applications. This agreement will extend Bachman's enterprise modeling capabilities into the Windows client/server environment. This extension will occur through Bachman's development of a component designer for PowerBuilder. The component designer will take portions of business models created with Bachman's tools into PowerBuilder for use in client/server applications.
To further support customers building client/server applications, Bachman will also build design tools for popular relational database management systems, beginning with SQL/Server from Sybase and Microsoft.
"Our customers are looking for ways to preserve the investment they have made in modeling their businesses while moving into the emerging world of client/server," said Arnold A. Kraft, president and CEO of Bachman. "With Bachman's development of a component designer for PowerBuilder, customers can use the enterprise models they have already built as the basis for developing new client/server applications. PowerBuilder's graphic painter tools and robust, extensible language make it easy for users to build new applications quickly and accurately through a rapid prototyping approach, saving time and money. In addition, PowerBuilder's superior integration with SQL/Server, combined with Bachman's excellence in database design, provides extra value for those customers looking to build Windows-based database applications," added Kraft.
"Bachman's leading modeling tools are an excellent complement to our object-oriented application development environment," said Mitchell E. Kertzman, chairman and CEO of Powersoft. "Combined, our customers have a comprehensive solution for building applications in today's downsized computer environments."
Bachman's component designer capability is planned for availability within the next two quarters. Bachman is also providing a service offering today to help its customers leverage the PowerBuilder development environment with their current Bachman modeling environment. Under the agreement, Bachman is a non-exclusive value-added reseller, authorized to resell PowerBuilder to its North American customers as part of a complete Model Driven Development (MDD) solution. Terms for Bachman's international subsidiaries and distributors are being determined on a country-by-country basis.
In the future, Bachman will extend its successful MDD architecture to support complex distributed design. By separating business rules from technology implementation, customers will be able to reuse and leverage their investment in business models as they design client/server applications. In client/server computing, where there are networks of systems and multiple computing layers, the applications design process becomes increasingly complex. Distributed design consists of allocating components of an enterprise model to the many different platforms in various locations across an enterprise. Bachman will develop automated design tools to support these complicated choices, to provide a highly practical and productive solution for tackling the client/server design process.
"We believe the goal of client/server technology is to increase access to information across the enterprise and reduce the cost of computing resources," said Kraft. "Bachman's MDD architecture provides the ideal environment to support this process through a reusable modeling capability and generation of distributed applications across multiple platforms," added Kraft.
