BACH TO BASICS YOUNG CONTEST WINNERS TO PLAY AT CITY ARTS CENTER THIS MONTH.

 Symphony Orchestra and Master Chorale's 6th annual Bach competition and the 2nd annual Gail Newby Concerto competition will perform at the Lancaster Performing Arts Center A performing arts center, often abbreviated PAC, is a multi-use performance space that can be adapted for use by various types of the performing arts, including dance, music and theatre.  later this month as part of their prize.

The winners, ages 7 to 19, came from around Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  to compete at a chance to win hundreds of dollars in scholarship prizes and to perform pieces solo or with the Antelope Valley Symphony Orchestra at LPAC 1. ``This has been a great, great experience,'' said first-place concerto winner Maria Wietrzymska, 19, of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. . ``You grow from every one of these competitions, but this one has been so much fun.''

Wietrzymska has been playing piano since she was 5 years old and grew up studying music in Poland. She moved on to studying at the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan and is now in her sophomore year at Azusa Pacific University External links

, where she is majoring in piano performance.

She has won a number of competitions all over the world and says she will be going on to pursue her graduate degree in music.

Seven-year-old Evan Luo of Lancaster, who placed second in the Bach competition, is a little less sure of his future in music.

``I just like to play,'' Evan said. ``It's fun. One hour a day, all the time.''

The Sundown Elementary School elementary school: see school.  student, who will perform Fugue fugue (fyg) [Ital.,=flight], in music, a form of composition in which the basic principle is imitative counterpoint of several voices.  in G major at the LPAC concert, has been playing for about two years. Even though his feet won't reach the pedals on a full-size piano, his fellow winners and even the symphony director say they are impressed by his performances.

``It's wonderful to see a young man like Evan do so well in this competition,'' said the director, David Newby. ``He really loves music and it's a joy to watch him play.''

 recital beginning at 7 p.m. will showcase the Bach competition winners.

The Feb. 19 concert will be at the Lancaster Performing Arts Center, 750 W. Lancaster Blvd.

Ticket prices are $18 for adults, $16 for seniors 62 and over, and $9 for children 17 and younger. For tickets, call (661) 723-5950.

The Bach competition winners will perform solo pieces at 7 p.m., followed by the concerto winners performing with the symphony at 8 p.m.

The competition was started six years ago to promote achievement in the arts by young people, Newby said.

The Gail Newby Concerto Competition is in its second year and is open to any young musicians. Gail Newby, the late wife of David Newby, was the principal keyboard player for the symphony for many years.

Other winners in the Gail Newby Concerto Competition include Heidi Hatch, 12, of Glendale.

Bach competition winners include Elton Chan, 17, of Arcadia; Alin Melik Adamyan of Glendale; Madison Alan-Lee, 10, of Sherman Oaks; Laurann Estevez, of Littlerock; Sammi Moraes, 14, of Woodland Hills; and Cameron O'Conner of Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969. .
