BACA URGES SUPPORT IN RACE; CANDIDATE DENIES `SINISTER ALLEGATIONS'.

Surrounded by cheering supporters Saturday morning, Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County sheriff candidate Lee Baca Leroy David Baca (b. May 27 1942, East Los Angeles, California) is the Sheriff of Los Angeles County, California.

After graduating from Benjamin Franklin High School (Los Angeles) in 1960, Baca worked his way through East Los Angeles College before starting with the L.A.
 spoke publicly for the first time since the death of his opponent, Sheriff Sherman Block, and urged voters to support him rather than leave the choice to the Board of Supervisors.

Baca did not go into the details of the incident during his news conference, but later issued a press release specifically disputing what he called ``sinister allegations'' against him.

``I did nothing inappropriate,'' he said in the press release about the chokehold demonstration, ``and, in fact, she did not complain about this until two years later during a hotly contested campaign.''

He said he had her permission for the demonstration and called her complaint, which is under investigation by the department, ``a blatant eleventh-hour attempt to discredit my campaign.''

Campaign officials for Block denied any involvement in the allegations. The sheriff died Thursday.
