 her infant son in the face because he would not stop crying escaped jail yesterday.

Brute Donna Smallbones, 21, had been drinking at a friend's house when she lost her temper with 19-monthold Mikey.

As she put him in his pushchair, he began screaming and she kicked out, leaving her trainer's footprint on his forehead.

Her friends were so shocked they called police to report the attack.

 Louise Cox said: "Police found four parallel dirty marks on his forehead. They appear to have been caused by a glancing blow from a shoe." Smallbones, who yesterday admitted assault, had initially denied denied the offence, but later confessed to kicking the toddler twice out of frustration.

Although there were no injuries, officers and paramedics saw evidence of the blow on Mikey's face last December. Magistrates in Market Harborough, Leics, heard the assault was "not intentional in·ten·tion·al

" and Smallboness admitted it was reckless reckless adj. in both negligence and criminal cases, careless to the point of being heedless of the consequences ("grossly" negligent). Most commonly this refers to the traffic misdemeanor "reckless driving. .

Chairman Terry Cane said the bench agreed with a probation recommendation and sentenced her to 18 months' community service. He also ordered her to complete an education, training and employment programme for 20 days to help her find a job.

Prakash Morar, defending, said: "No injury was caused, yes contact was made."

Mikey is currently on the child protection register as Smallbones, of Market Harborough, has learning difficulties and it is feared she may not be able to cope.

The court heard the boy is now in the care of her parents.
