For John Madrid John Madrid (1948?–February 1990) was a jazz and pop trumpet player, active mainly from the 1960s to the 1980s. He is noted for his remarkable accuracy and power in the upper register (which led to him being hired mostly to play lead or scream trumpet) but he was also capable  and Kimberly Krygoski, this weekend promised to be filled with the unforgetable moments parents share when their first child turns 1.

A party had been planned. And all of little Adrianna Krygoski's friends and relatives were invited.

``Monday after work I had planned on taking Adrianna with me to get the decorations and everything,'' Krygoski, 21, said. ``We invited everyone we knew - and knew her.''

But there will be no birthday cake, no balloons and no celebration for the little girl who would have turned 1 Saturday.

Krygoski and Madrid received phone calls Monday afternoon while they were at work: Adrianna was in the hospital.

They arrived to find a familiar-looking man in handcuffs hand·cuff

Adrianna died early Wednesday. The same day, the man - Jose Salazar, a friend of Adrianna's baby sitter - was charged with the child's murder.

``She was just learning to walk. She was so innocent,'' said Madrid, 23. ``It's kind of tough, you go from planning a birthday party to planning her funeral.''

Police said Adrianna had been left in Salazar's care Monday morning by the child's baby sitter, who said she was leaving for a half-hour to run errands. Salazar, they said, was the boyfriend of the baby sitter's 17-year-old daughter.

Salazar called 911 about 12:30 p.m. to report Adrianna was vomiting vomiting, ejection of food and other matter from the stomach through the mouth, often preceded by nausea. Police said they believe Salazar hit and shook the little girl, while the baby sitter was gone. He was arrested at the hospital.

``It goes back to the old thing: know who you are dealing with as a baby sitter,'' said Detective Steve Bernard Ber·nard , Claude 1813-1878.

The baby sitter has not been charged with a crime, Bernard said.

The couple said they thought they knew the woman, who lives in the same Sherman Way apartment complex in Reseda, well enough to entrust their only daughter to her.

Krygoski was a stay-at-home mother until about a month ago, when she got a job in the mail room of an insurance office. She said she thought the woman would be a natural choice for baby sitter, and a welcome alternative to a day-care facility.

``She's right here in the building. She has a key to my apartment - if my daughter needed anything, it was here,'' Krygoski said. ``Because I knew her, I thought it would be better.''

Krygoski and Madrid both said they had seen Salazar at the complex in the past, but didn't know him.

They also said they would never have allowed the baby sitter to leave Adrianna with Salazar, or anyone else, for that matter.

``She had no right leaving my daughter with him. She never asked my permission, probably because she knew I would have said no,'' Krygoski said. ``We even left her the extra car seat to take (Adrianna) if she had to go somewhere.''

Krygoski and Madrid said they are angry and hurt. And now, instead of celebrating their daughter's first birthday and the rest to come, all they can do is mourn mourn

``She was the most special baby in the whole world,'' Madrid said.

``It's like I didn't have a life without her,'' Krygoski said. ``Everything I did was with her. It's like I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)
