BABY'S DEATH INVESTIGATED AS HOMICIDE AFTER AUTOPSY.

The death of a 7-month-old boy is being investigated as a homicide after an autopsy showed that the infant suffered a head injury before he died, sheriff's officials said.

``We found an injury that was initially not detected, which leads us to believe that was the cause of death,'' said homicide Detective Joel Brown Joel Brown (born 31 January 1980) is an American hurdler.

He finished sixth at the 2005 World Championships and seventh at the 2005 World Athletics Final.

Officials said the mother, a Lancaster resident, had taken the infant to the Kaiser Permanente Kaiser Permanente is an integrated managed care organization, based in Oakland, California, founded in 1945 by industrialist Henry J. After her doctor visit, the mother returned home but later took the baby to the hospital emergency room.

``It's a tough case,'' Brown said. ``Any time a child has problems, it makes it tough.''

Officials said they had initially listed the baby's death as being from natural causes, but an autopsy indicated he had suffered a major head injury. They are now trying to determine how he was injured and by whom.

``With babies, it's hard to determine the injuries unless it's obvious,'' Brown said. ``Babies are so fragile.''
