BAA UK Airports Detailed Traffic Figures for September 2001.

LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 11, 2001

As announced on October October: see month.  3, BAA's seven UK airports handled a total of 11.2 million passengers in September September: see month. , a drop of 6.0% against the same month last year.

Passenger numbers were profoundly affected by the terrorist attacks in the USA on September 11. For the first ten days of the month traffic was 3.0% up on last year. In the period following September 11 traffic was down 10.6%.

There was strong growth at Stansted Stansted could be
  • London Stansted Airport, which is near the village of
  • Stansted Mountfitchet in Essex
or it could be the village of:
  • Stansted, Kent
or the historic house and park
  • Stansted Park

 (+11.4%), Glasgow (+6.9%) and Edinburgh (+13.4%), buoyed by the continued success of the low cost scheduled carriers. There was also modest growth at Aberdeen (+0.5%).

Heathrow experienced a drop for the month of 13.0% with a 0.7% decline in the first ten days, then a 19.7% drop in the period after September 11. Gatwick's 6.2% decrease for the month of September was made up of a 0.6% gain in the first ten days, followed by a 10.0% drop after the September 11. Southampton recorded a fall of 2.2% in the month

Traffic in the first few days of October showed a similar decline to that recorded at the end of September.

There were gains for the month in domestic traffic (+0.9%), European European

emanating from or pertaining to Europe.

The worst affected routes were North Atlantic, down 25.9%. North Atlantic traffic dropped 2.8% in the first ten days, then 38.0% in the period after September 11.

Other long haul Long distance. Long haul implies traversing a state or a country. Contrast with short haul.  traffic fell 6.8% for the month, was 1.4% down in the first ten days of the month, then declined 10.0% in the remainder of the month.

Air transport movements at the seven airports rose 0.8% in September.
