BAA January Traffic Figures Stansted Up Nearly 50%, Gatwick Up Over 10%.


LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--February 10, 1999--BAA plc, the UK-based airport company, today announced that its seven UK airports handled a total of 7.6 million passengers in January, an increase of 7.3% on the same month last year.

All the key markets saw growth in January, the largest being a 13.9% increase on Irish routes. North Atlantic traffic grew 9.2% and there was a 9% gain in other long haul Long distance. Long haul implies traversing a state or a country. Contrast with short haul.  traffic. European European

 scheduled traffic increased 7.9% on last year, most of it at Stansted which recorded overall growth of 48.9%.

Southampton grew by 21.6% mainly due to a 17.4% increase on new European scheduled services. Gatwick (+ 10.2%) saw its biggest increase since April last year with 17.6% growth in North Atlantic traffic and 18.5% in other long-haul traffic. Heathrow recorded a gain of 3.3% and BAA's Scottish airports an increase of 3.7%.
