BA in deal to merge.BRITISH Airways British Airways in full British Airways PLC International passenger airline based in London. In 1936 British Airways Ltd. was founded through the merger of three smaller airlines. and Iberia last night agreed the basis for a proposed merger expected to be completed in late 2010, a BA spokesman said. The proposed merger would create an airline group with 419 aircraft which would fly to 205 destinations. BA chief executive Willie Walsh Willie Walsh (born in 1961) is an Irish airline executive. He is currently the Chief Executive Officer of British Airways and is a former Chief Executive of Aer Lingus Early life Walsh was born in Dublin, Ireland. He attended his local secondary school Ardscoil Rís. said: "The merger will create a strong European airline well able to compete in the 21st century. "Both airlines will retain their brands and heritage while achieving significant synergies as a combined force A military force composed of elements of two or more allied nations. See also force(s). ." BA are expected to own 55 per cent of the new company. They already hold 13.5 per cent of Iberia. The merger would need approval from the European Commission. BA's announcement comes a week after they said they would cut a further 1200 jobs, as they reported a first-half loss for the first time. |
