CHILDREN have been told not to use the terms BC and AD in dates.

Instead they are have to write BCE BCE
abbr.
1. Bachelor of Chemical Engineering

2. Bachelor of Civil Engineering

BCE

Abbreviation for before the Common Era.
, standing for Before Common Era, instead of BC, and CE, standing for Common Era, instead of AD.

Parents Philip and Anne Long saw the abbreviations when helping their son Alex, 11, with his homework.

He had been told to use them by his history teacher at Dorothy Stringer School in Brighton.

His parents said they were astonished to hear pupils were no longer using AD - short for Anno Domini ANNO DOMINI, in the year of our Lord, abbreviated, A. D. The computation of time from the incarnation of our Saviour which is used as the date of all public deeds in the United States and Christian countries, on which account it is called the "vulgar vera." , the Latin for in the year of our Lord - and BC, meaning Before Christ. Mr Long said: "Why did they judge it so important to change a term that is universally used and accepted to describe a particular period of time?"

John Thorne, deputy headteacher, said yesterday: "The terms BCE and CE have been used for many years. They're approved international terms."

A Department for Education spokesman said the national curriculum "clearly stated" the terms AD and BC should be taught.

He added: "Schools are free to use other terms. But there is no suggestion that these terms should become replacements for AD and BC."
