B-Telecom Selects Lucent Technologies for Access Equipment to Enable Ethernet Services Rollout across Belgium.

GROOT-BIJGAARDEN, Belgium -- Lucent to work with business partner Imtech Telecom to provide metro Ethernet A metropolitan area network (MAN) that uses a 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) backbone rather than SONET/SDH links. Ethernet offers a more economical alternative. In a Metro Ethernet network, multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) may be deployed to provide quality of service (QoS).  infrastructure

:LU) today announced that it has been selected by B-Telecom, a leading service provider based in Belgium, to provide multiservice optical networking Communications between computers, telephones and other electronic devices using light. An optical network is far more reliable and has far greater potential transmission capacity than networking in the electrical domain. See optical fiber.  infrastructure to support its roll-out of Ethernet services to its business customers.

The deployment enables B-Telecom to provide revenue-generating services such as transparent Ethernet Private Lines and Ethernet Private LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used.  Services as well as managed IP services using Lucent's proven Ethernet over SDH Ethernet Over SDH (EoS) or Ethernet over SONET refers to a set of protocols which allow Ethernet traffic to be carried over synchronous digital hierarchy networks in an efficient and flexible way.  (synchronous digital hierarchy (communications, standard) Synchronous Digital Hierarchy - (SDH) An international digital telecommunications network hierarchy which standardises transmission around the bit rate of 51.84 megabits per second, which is also called STS-1. ) solution. Lucent is working with business partner Imtech Telecom to support the implementation of these services as well as to assure the 24-hour, seven-day a week maintenance services with a four hour response time.

"We selected Lucent as a market leader in the development and understanding of Ethernet over SDH," said Roland Matthys, Manager - Marketing & Sales for B-Telecom. "Working with Lucent and Imtech Telecom for this project will ensure that we are able to offer secure, reliable, flexible and cost-competitive services to our customers."

"This is an example of Lucent continuing to work closely with customers to identify relevant, profitable and cost effective means of creating revenue generating services for their end users," said Beatrice Duleba, Sales Director, Business Partner France & Belgium, Lucent Technologies. "We look forward to working with B-Telecom as they develop their service offerings."

The Lucent solution is designed to create a service converged platform by working with existing optical networking infrastructure to offer cost-effective multiservice support without the expense of creating and maintaining a separate overlay data network. B-Telecom is one of the first service providers to have deployed Ethernet over SDH services in Belgium.

"Imtech Telecom, already being a technical partner of B-Telecom for optical services delivery combined with its deep knowledge and broad expertise on optical networking as well as a solid key-vendor relationship with Lucent, has strongly contributed to B-Telecom's decision to select the Lucent solutions," said Filip Simoens, General Manager of Imtech Telecom. "Therefore we are looking forward to make this roll-out of Ethernet services a great success for B-Telecom."

Lucent is providing B-Telecom with its high-speed platform that combines the speed and reliability of optical backbones with proven and ubiquitous Ethernet technology that is the standard in local area networks. The Metropolis(R) AM and Metropolis(R) AMS AMS - Andrew Message System  multiplexers equipped with TransLAN(R) optional cards for Ethernet transport capability between customers' businesses in multiple locations, form the basis of Lucent's access SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) The European counterpart to SONET.  solution.

Lucent's TransLAN(R) technology is available across the whole managed SDH Metropolis(R) product portfolio ranging from access to core. The TransLAN(R) platform can also be extended by B-Telecom to offer Gigabit Ethernet An Ethernet standard that transmits at 1 Gbps. Used mostly to connect high-end workstations and servers as well as for network backbones, Gigabit Ethernet transmits full duplex from point to point using switches and half duplex in a shared environment (CSMA/CD) using a hub.  services in the future.
