B&W Purchases Another 1 Million Pounds of Low Nitrosamine Tobacco From Star.

Star Scientific, Inc. (OTC-BB: STSI) announces the receipt of an additional 1 million pound Purchase Order from Brown & Williamson, the third largest U.S. tobacco company (B&W), for low-nitrosamine (TSNA) tobacco cured using Star's patented StarCure(TM) process, which will be delivered during this year's growing season (which ends in the middle of October).

Malcolm "Mac" Bailey, Star Scientific's President (and a 5th generation Virginia farmer who is also President of the Virginia Agricultural Growers Association) said that Star has already processed and delivered to B&W approximately 1,800,000 pounds of StarCure(TM) low TSNA tobacco as part of B&W's original Purchase Order for flue-cured tobacco. "Mac" Bailey said that he was now able to verify that independent analytical testing of StarCure(TM) processed tobacco conducted at the University of Kentucky's Organic Chemistry Laboratories, under the direction of Professor Harold Burton, reflected virtually undetectable levels of TSNAs measured in parts per billion. The 2-step StarCure(TM) method involves barn processing and microwave treatment to produce low- nitrosamine (TSNA) tobacco. According to the Canadian Health Ministry, tobacco specific "nitrosamines cause cancer" and "they are the most active cancer-causing agent in tobacco". In addition to filling B&W's purchase orders for approximately 2,400,000 pounds of StarCure(TM) processed low-TSNA tobacco to be delivered during this year's growing season, Star will begin to integrate low-nitrosamine TSNA tobacco into its own 4 discount brands. Further, Star is now using in all of its 4 discount brands expensive activated charcoal filters, which Star believes holds the promise of reducing additional pharmacologically active, volatile toxins in tobacco smoke.

Star recently issued a comprehensive Policy Statement which stated unequivocally that the adult choice of using smoked tobacco products necessarily involves a range of serious health risks and that Star is committed to manufacturing products that are as safe as is technologically possible. Star plans to make no health claims, directly or indirectly, concerning its low-nitrosamine (TSNA) tobacco, until further science is developed. Star continues to express strong interest in expanding its working relationship with public health experts, agencies, and regulatory authorities to develop and implement methods for evaluating the potential public health benefits of low-nitrosamine tobacco products.

In a similar fashion, Star is developing "smokeless tobacco" products, and this year expects to process, through its StarCure(TM) barn-microwave 2-step curing process, "dark fired tobacco" for use in the manufacture of "smokeless tobacco" or chewing tobacco products. Star anticipates, within the next 12-15 months, marketing or supplying other manufacturers with dark fired StarCure(TM) processed tobacco which will contain virtually undetectable levels of TSNAs, measured in parts per billion.

"Mac" Bailey said that the StarCure(TM) processed low-nitrosamine tobacco which Star will make available this growing season has been produced as a result of Star's accelerated barn construction/farming program, which has resulted in the construction and placement of in excess of 160 new curing barns on tobacco farms located in Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia and Florida, as well as in Ontario, Canada. "Mac" Bailey added that the StarCure(TM) process does not affect the taste, color or nicotine content of the tobacco leaf. Mr. Bailey said that Star plans to add an additional 1,000 new curing barns within the next 12-15 months, which Star anticipates will be placed on farms in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Kentucky and Ontario, Canada. Star's curing barns are being manufactured by Powell Manufacturing Company of Bennettsville, South Carolina under an exclusive contract with Star. Powell is the largest curing barn manufacturer in the United States.

Star anticipates expanding its scientific and clinical testing program for its StarCure(TM) tobacco during the 4th quarter. Funds generated from Star's improved operating results are expected to enable Star to further expand upon the data already secured from a 19 day, cross-over Phase I clinical study conducted under an FDA reviewed protocol at Virginia's Commonwealth University, Medical College of Virginia, under the supervision of Professor William Barr, the protocol's principal investigator. These data and some of the clinical study's initial findings were presented in early September at the CORESTA scientific meeting in Innsbruck, Austria by Dr. Mirjana Djordjevic of the American Health Foundation of Valhalla, New York.

Professor Robert J. DeLorenzo, M.D., Ph.D., Star's Chairman and CEO, announced the election of Dr. Elliot D. Prager as Star Scientific's 3rd Independent Director. Dr. DeLorenzo, who is also Chairman of the Department of Neurology at Virginia Commonwealth University, said that Dr. Prager's broad experiences for the past 30 years as a Board Certified Colon Rectal Surgeon, specializing in cancer related surgical procedures at the highly regarded Sansum Medical Clinic in Santa Barbara, California, will add an expanded perspective to Star's ranks of independent directors. Dr. Prager graduated with honors from Dartmouth College (1962) and Harvard Medical School (1966).
