University's Recent Elimination of 'Monty Montezuma' Launch

Following a long and sometimes bitter on and off-campus fight over San Diego State University's elimination of the school's long-time mascot, "Monty Montezuma", a new independent non-profit organization A non-profit organization (abbreviated "NPO", also "non-profit" or "not-for-profit") is a legally constituted organization whose primary objective is to support or to actively engage in activities of public or private interest without any commercial or monetary profit purposes.  will be presenting its own "Aztec Warrior" to maintain the warrior tradition formerly portrayed by the Montezuma figure that served as the school's symbol for more than 50 years.

The new Aztec Warrior will make a surprise appearance on Saturday

The recently formed Aztec Warrior Foundation is made up of independent alumni, students and supporters of SDSU athletics and educational activities. The non-profit organization was created "to promote civic responsibility, philanthropy, education, and tradition." San Diego State University San Diego State University (SDSU), founded in 1897 as San Diego Normal School, is the largest and oldest higher education facility in the greater San Diego area (generally the City and County of San Diego), and is part of the California State University system.  has been without a mascot for the past two years. An ongoing debate between students, faculty, alumni and student organizations argued over the political, cultural and ethnic accuracy and appropriateness of a human depiction of an Aztec Warrior.
