Azimuth Systems Announces Voice over Wi-Fi Handset Test Suite; Automated Tests Enable the Verification of Voice Quality, Roaming Performance and Power Consumption of VoWi-Fi and Converged Cellular/Wi-Fi Handsets.

BOSTON -- Azimuth azimuth (ăz`əməth), in astronomy, one coordinate in the altazimuth coordinate system. It is the angular distance of a body measured westward along the celestial horizon from the observer's south point.  Systems Inc., the leading provider of Wi-Fi(R) engineering test equipment, today announced a Voice over Wi-Fi Transmitting IP-based telephone calls (VoIP) over a Wi-Fi network. Voice over Wi-Fi (Vo-Fi) provides enhancements to the 802.11 standards for handling the real time environment of voice calls. With a single mode Vo-Fi phone, users can make calls only within a Wi-Fi hotspot.  (VoWi-Fi) test suite that enables service providers, handset providers and semiconductor vendors to streamline the testing of VoWi-Fi phones and converged wireless devices. The powerful new version of the VoWi-Fi Handset Test Suite adds power consumption testing to the automated scripts, and allows vendors to analyze voice quality, roaming performance and battery life of wireless VoIP See voice over Wi-Fi.  handsets under various motion and traffic conditions. The suite runs on Azimuth's award-winning W-Series test platform, and includes a simpler, richer development toolkit that can improve the quality and time-to-market delivery of VoWi-Fi handsets.

The VoWi-Fi Handset Test Suite utilizes Azimuth's sophisticated TestMAC(TM) motion emulation and automated traffic generation in completely isolated RadioProof(TM) enclosures to ensure the accuracy and repeatability of results. It can be used to conduct the following automated tests:

--Handset Range Test: Evaluates voice quality as the distance between a handset and access point (AP) increases. The system's MOS (1) (Metal Oxide Semiconductor) See MOSFET.

(2) (Mean Opinion Score) The quality of a digitized voice line. It is a subjective measurement that is derived entirely by people listening to the calls and scoring the results from
(Mean Opinion Score) vs. range is determined by measuring delay, jitter A flicker or fluctuation in a transmission signal or display image. The term is used in several ways, but it always refers to some offset of time and space from the norm. For example, in a network transmission, jitter would be a bit arriving either ahead or behind a standard clock cycle , packet loss and transmission rate as path loss is gradually increased, or by using an external Voice Quality Test measurement device.

--Handset Roaming Performance Test: Measures roaming time and analyzes protocol behavior as a handset roams between APs. Controlled roaming times reduce the impact of packet loss, which degrades call quality each time a handset switches to a new AP.

--Power Consumption Test: Determines the current draw characteristics and expected battery life of a handset in a variety of usage scenarios.

, but they vary greatly in terms of performance," said Jeff Abramowitz, vice president of marketing at Azimuth Systems. "Azimuth equipment is being used by leading vendors to optimize their product designs and by service providers to qualify handsets for use on their networks. The new VoWi-Fi Handset Test Suite adds the power consumption tests and engineering development tools required to meet the demands of the VoWi-Fi market."

The VoWi-Fi Handset Test Suite is a software package that runs on Azimuth's W-Series test platform, currently used by more than 90 leading Wi-Fi vendors. The software suite can also be delivered as part of a pre-packaged bundle specifically aimed at handset testing, the VTB-VHS. It features easy-to-use test scripts The instructions in a test program. It defines the actions and pass/fail criteria. For example, if the action is "to enter a valid account number," the expected result is that the data are accepted. Entering an invalid number should yield a particular error message. See test case.  that simplify configuration and provide the flexibility to support a broad range of devices and scenarios. The software suite now incorporates power consumption testing and also includes a development toolkit that has been upgraded with a new user interface and on-line programming guides.

The VoWi-Fi Handset Test Suite is being demonstrated at Fall VON in Boston at booth #1249 and will be available on October 10th.

VoWi-Fi Handset Test Follows the Azimuth Approach

The VoWi-Fi Handset Test Suite follows Azimuth's patented testing approach for providing unmatched repeatability, flexibility and automation for wireless data communications data communications, application of telecommunications technology to the problem of transmitting data, especially to, from, or between computers. In popular usage, it is said that data communications make it possible for one computer to "talk" with another.  testing. The six key elements of the Azimuth Approach include: RadioProof(TM) enclosures that isolate the RF environment; SmartMotion(TM) technology to precisely control virtual motion between devices in the network; TestMAC(TM) technology to emulate clients and APs and to perform protocol behavior tests; a Real2Real(TM) architecture that enables interoperability The capability of two or more hardware devices or two or more software routines to work harmoniously together. For example, in an Ethernet network, display adapters, hubs, switches and routers from different vendors must conform to the Ethernet standard and interoperate with each other.  testing between real world devices; Azimuth DIRECTOR(TM) test executive to provide an easy-to-use console for test and device management; and Azimuth STUDIO(TM) database management software for automated report generation and correlation of test results.
