Azimuth Systems Announces Industry's First Commercial Wi-Fi Mesh Testing Solution; Mesh Suite Addresses Growing Opportunity in Testing Enterprise-Grade Wi-Fi Infrastructure.

ACTON, Mass. -- Azimuth azimuth (ăz`əməth), in astronomy, one coordinate in the altazimuth coordinate system. It is the angular distance of a body measured westward along the celestial horizon from the observer's south point.  Systems Inc., the leading provider of Wi-Fi(R) engineering test equipment, today announced the release of the Azimuth Wi-Fi Mesh Test software suite, the industry's first commercial solution that automates the performance testing Performance Testing covers a broad range of engineering or functional evaluations where a material, product, or system is not specified by detailed material or component specifications: Rather, emphasis is on the final measurable performance characteristics.  of wireless mesh networks (1) A network that relies on all nodes to propagate signals. Although the wireless signal may start at some base station (access point) attached to a wired network, a wireless mesh network extends the transmission distance by relaying the signal from one computer to another.  in a controlled laboratory environment. Mesh testing serves an important element of the rapidly growing Wi-Fi enterprise and public infrastructure markets as more municipalities deploy wireless networks to deliver high-performance broadband access See broadband and wireless broadband.  to first responders, residents and businesses within a wide area. By using Azimuth's Wi-Fi Mesh Test software on the award winning W-Series test platform, Wi-Fi infrastructure manufacturers can ensure maximum product performance and quality, while streamlining their testing.

Rather than sending and receiving data from a central point, wireless mesh networks use a series of nodes to pass data and share bandwidth. Unlike traditional Wi-Fi testing applications that evaluate clients connected to a single access point, testing Wi-Fi mesh networks requires an entire matrix of nodes, which introduces layers of complexity and significant performance challenges to the testing process. The new mesh solution leverages Azimuth's established leadership as the test equipment supplier for manufacturers of enterprise-grade Wi-Fi systems, with current Azimuth customers accounting for 98 percent of the enterprise access points on the market as verified by ABI Abi (ā`bī) [short for Abijah], in the Bible, King Hezekiah's mother.

"We predict that mesh network revenue will grow from nearly zero in 2005 to $1.2 billion in 2010. Thorough testing of Wi-Fi mesh technology will be required to enable these large scale deployments," said Sam Lucero, senior analyst, wireless connectivity research at ABI Research. "The ability to test wireless mesh networks in a controlled, repeatable manner allows vendors to identify potential issues prior to being introduced into the field, where finding problems may be logistically challenging and costly."

The new Azimuth software is a suite of scripts that measure six key areas of mesh network performance: node client-capacity; multi-hop throughput performance; fail-over and smooth roaming performance; call capacity and voice transmission quality; security performance; and multi-BSSID (Basic Service Set Identifier In Wi-Fi Wireless LAN computer networking, a service set identifier (SSID) is a code attached to all packets on a wireless network to identify each packet as part of that network. ) isolation and security. The software runs on the Azimuth W-Series platform and leverages several aspects of the company's unique testing approach, including patented SmartMotion(TM) technology to emulate motion in a controlled environment, Real2Real(TM) architecture to enable interoperability testing and RadioProof(TM) enclosures for testing repeatability. Azimuth currently offers more than 20 automated test scripts that validate performance for mission-critical applications such as voice emulation and call capacity and ensure compatibility with emerging standards such as 802.11T roaming.

"Mesh networking Mesh networking is a way to route data, voice and instructions between nodes. It allows for continuous connections and reconfiguration around broken or blocked paths by “hopping” from node to node until the destination is reached.  is an exciting Wi-Fi market opportunity that presents new levels of complexity and scalability that exceed the limits of traditional test methods," said Jeff Abramowitz, vice president of marketing at Azimuth Systems. "By extending the expertise gained from years of testing enterprise networks, Azimuth is uniquely positioned to address the mesh market. The Azimuth Wi-Fi Mesh Test Software Suite allows automated configuration of the network to multiple different topologies and scenarios, simplifying the testing process and drastically reducing test time."

The Azimuth mesh testing solution will stress the performance limits of mesh systems while affording vendors considerable cost and time savings. Prior to the introduction of Azimuth's automated mesh test script, testing had to be completed in live sites. This required not just weeks of setup time, but also weeks of manual measurement of coverage and performance at various points around the area. , this method lacked the scalability to test all possible load, motion, background interference and device configuration scenarios - leaving some bugs and network vulnerabilities unchecked.

Azimuth's Broad Product Portfolio

Azimuth Systems offers the industry's broadest portfolio of Wi-Fi engineering test equipment. Azimuth's W-Series is the industry's first standardized test A standardized test is a test administered and scored in a standard manner. The smaller, engineering development version of the W-Series sells with a software toolkit that enables the customization required for use in design labs. The Azimuth product portfolio includes the ACE(TM) 400NB, the industry's first multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO (Multiple Input/Multiple Output) Pronounced "my-mo," it is the use of multiple transmitters and receivers (multiple antennas) on wireless devices for improved performance. ) channel emulator for testing next-generation Wi-Fi products, the ADEPT(TM)-WFA, a tool used in certification tests by the Wi-Fi Alliance (Wi-Fi Alliance, Austin, TX, www.wi-fi.org) A membership organization founded in 1999 devoted to certifying 802.11 wireless Ethernet devices for interoperability.
