Professor Edward Ayer's book about the fighting in the great Shenandoah Valley Shenandoah valley, part of the Great Valley of the Appalachians, c.150 mi (240 km) long, N Va., located between the Blue Ridge and the Allegheny mts. The valley is divided into two parts by Massanutten Mt., a ridge c.45 mi (70 km) long and c.3,000 ft (915 m) high.  shows the entire Civil War in microcosm. The immense valley that runs through Virginia and Pennsylvania was an irreplaceable source of food and industry for North and South alike, and its inhabitants

endured immense privation and uncertainties as its fortunes continually changed throughout the war. Ayer brilliantly demonstrates this in his portrayal of two Valley counties, Confederate and Federal, separated by some 300 miles but united by the tragedy and waste of total war. This was war at the ground-eye level, experienced by the merchants and farmers, parents and preachers who could depend on no one, and often knew their adversaries by name.

This is a splendid social history, based on the "primary source documents" that historians love to research--the personal letters, the diaries, the local newspaper stories and reminiscences of the so-called grassroots people who do not make great national policies, but often suffer for them. The book is no substitute for a conventional history of the Civil War, and teachers should be advised that it requires a basic knowledge of the conflict, its personalities, and its geography.
