Axya has developed a patented, proprietary method of utilizing ultrasonic energy to weld polymeric materials used in surgical procedures. Its initial products are designed to ultrasonically weld suture, thereby eliminating knot tying by the surgeon and knot impingement. These advantages are evident in the AxyaWeld(TM) System 1000, which is now being released for rotator cuff repair. AxyaWeld has been developed in collaboration with a number of leading sports medicine surgeons. This experience led to the conclusion that the elimination of knot tying through suture welding is a cost-effective alternative to what can be a time consuming, tedious task.
