Business Editors/Health/Medical Writers

BEVERLY, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 10, 2004

Axya Medical Inc., a privately held medical device company, announced today that it has demonstrated technological advances with its Axya Sonic Scalpel scalpel /scal·pel/ (skal´p'l) a small surgical knife usually having a convex edge.

(TM) ultrasonic surgical system which will be used for cutting and coagulation coagulation (kōăg'ylā`shən), the collecting into a mass of minute particles of a solid dispersed throughout a liquid (a sol), usually followed by the precipitation or  of soft tissue structures in endoscopic and open surgical procedures. Axya received its 510 (k) clearance for the system in September 2003, and is currently seeking industry partners.

The company reported that the Sonic Scalpel is the latest addition to its ultrasonic technology platform. It joins the AxyaWeld(TM) system; a product currently marketed that uses ultrasonic energy to weld surgical sutures replacing knot tying by the surgeon. Surgeons using AxyaWeld report that it virtually eliminates the risk of knot slippage or unraveling. It is particularly helpful in minimally invasive surgery minimally invasive surgery Laparoscopic surgery, see there.
