Axis Introduces World's Smallest MPEG-4 Network Camera.

CHELMSFORD, Mass. -- Axis Communications Axis Communications AB (XSSE:AXIS) is a manufacturer of IT equipment, mostly known for its print servers and network cameras. According to its latest annual report, it has sold over 500.000 network cameras, thus claiming to be the world leader in that market. , the global leader in the network video market, launched today the AXIS 207 Network Camera, a true bandwidth-efficient network camera that utilizes MPEG-4 image compression Noun 1. image compression - the compression of graphics for storage or transmission
compression - encoding information while reducing the bandwidth or bits required
to provide the best image quality of any camera in its class. At about the size of a deck of cards (approximately 2 x 1 x 3 inches), the AXIS 207 is the world's smallest MPEG-4 network camera. It is designed for indoor surveillance and remote monitoring (protocol) remote monitoring - (RMON) A network management protocol that allows network information to be gathered at a single computer. Whereas SNMP gathers network data from a single type of Management Information Base (MIB), RMON 1 defines nine additional MIBs that provide a  applications and is ideal for securing small businesses, home offices and residences.

Unlike Web cameras, the AXIS 207 operates independently of a PC and contains a built-in Web server. This enables users to access live images from anywhere in the world via the Internet. The camera provides full-motion video Video transmission that changes the image 30 frames per second (30 fps). Motion pictures are run at 24 fps, which is the minimum frequency required to eliminate the perception of moving frames and make the images appear visually fluid to the eye.  (up to 30 frames a second) using MPEG-4 compression or Motion JPEG video streaming. It also contains a built-in microphone that enables users to hear intruders or visitors, and its input/output port allows for the control of alarms, doors and locks. The high audio quality is guaranteed by built-in MPEG-4 AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) An audio compression technology that is part of the MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 standards. AAC, especially MPEG-4 AAC, provides greater compression and better sound quality than MP3, which also came out of the MPEG standard.  encoding technology in collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS (Internet Information Services) Microsoft's Web server. IIS runs under the server versions of Windows, adding HTTP server capability to the Windows operating system. .

"The AXIS 207 provides the highest quality video of any network camera designed specifically for entry-level users," said Fredrik Nilsson, general manager of Axis Communications. "Security and surveillance has become increasingly important to small businesses, home offices and residences, and Axis is meeting this market's needs by offering a high quality camera at an affordable price."

The AXIS 207 comes with a high-quality progressive scan CMOS image sensor A CMOS-based chip that records the intensities of light as variable charges similar to a CCD chip. Although initially used in less expensive digital cameras, the quality of CMOS sensors has improved steadily.

CMOS sensors have advantages over CCDs.
to provide excellent images in lighting conditions as low as one lux. It also has a built-in ActiveX media player and is compatible with QuickTime, Real Networks, Mplayer, PacketVideo, and handheld devices such as PDAs and cell phones. Additional features include alarm and event management, video motion detection and multiple user access levels with password protection.

The AXIS 207 will be available this month through Axis' distribution channels. The manufacturer's suggested retail price is $349.
