Axis Introduces First Network Camera Designed for Buses and Trains.


CHELMSFORD, Mass. -- Axis Communications Axis Communications AB (XSSE:AXIS) is a manufacturer of IT equipment, mostly known for its print servers and network cameras. According to its latest annual report, it has sold over 500.000 network cameras, thus claiming to be the world leader in that market. , the global leader in the network video market, today introduced the first network camera designed for use in buses and rail vehicles Rail vehicles are vehicles capable of rolling on rail tracks. . The AXIS 209FD-R Network Camera is a compact, ruggedized camera that can resist the vibrations, dust and high humidity typically found in mass transit mass transit, public transportation systems designed to move large numbers of passengers. Types and Advantages


Mass transit refers to municipal or regional public shared transportation, such as buses, streetcars, and ferries, open to all on a
 vehicles. The network camera measures less than 1.6 inches high and provides crisp digital video over an IP network.

The interior of public transport vehicles are often designed with curved walls and ceilings and often lined with soft padding, which makes it difficult to install surveillance cameras with traditional designs. The AXIS 209FD-R has been customized for installation in these interiors so that it will remain securely in place over time. The camera can be connected to a recording device onboard the vehicle via an Ethernet cable The most common form of Ethernet cable is the telephone-like RJ-45 cable (see Ethernet). Using a "crossover cable," two machines can be plugged together using their Ethernet ports. The crossover cable is designed for direct connection between two Ethernet devices (PCs, peripherals, etc. , and it can transmit signals over the Internet using wide-range wireless networks.

"Buses, trains and other transit vehicles are unique environments for surveillance because they are compact spaces that are constantly in motion," said Fredrik Nilsson, general manager of Axis Communications. "The AXIS 209FD-R is specifically engineered to operate in these conditions, enabling transit authorities to provide better protection and security for drivers and passengers."

Stockholm Transport, one of the leading bus operators in Europe, is the customer first to order the AXIS 209FD-R for its entire fleet of more than 2,000 buses. The company plans to install between five and six cameras in each bus starting in early 2007.

Equipped with Power over Ethernet Power over Ethernet or PoE technology describes a system to transmit electrical power, along with data, to remote devices over standard twisted-pair cable in an Ethernet network.  (PoE) capability, the AXIS 209FD-R uses one Ethernet cable for both power and video, simplifying installation. The AXIS 209FD-R will be available through Axis' distribution channels in January 2007 for the manufacturer's suggested retail price of $599.
