Axis Introduces First MPEG-2 Network Camera for High-End Security and Surveillance Applications.

Axis Communications Axis Communications AB (XSSE:AXIS) is a manufacturer of IT equipment, mostly known for its print servers and network cameras. According to its latest annual report, it has sold over 500.000 network cameras, thus claiming to be the world leader in that market.  launched today the first network camera based on MPEG-2 compression for demanding, around-the-clock security and surveillance applications. The AXIS 230 MPEG-2 Network Camera is a day/night camera that delivers 30 frames per second of DVD-quality video and synchronized audio over IP networks. It is designed for customers requiring continuous, high quality audio and video in a variety of lighting conditions, such as departments of transportation, airports, casinos, hospitals and universities.

The camera's MPEG-2 video and audio compression Encoding digital audio data to take up less storage space and transmission bandwidth. Audio compression typically uses lossy methods, which eliminate bits that are not restored at the other end. ADPCM and MP3 are examples of audio compression methods. The AXIS 230 also provides support for multicasting over a local area network, allowing an unlimited number of simultaneous viewers.

"Previously, MPEG-2 quality compression was only available from video server technology, so Axis is now extending that same high-end functionality to its network camera line."

. Authorized users can access and manage all audio and video feeds via the Internet and a standard Web browser The program that serves as your front end to the Web on the Internet. In order to view a site, you type its address (URL) into the browser's Location field; for example, www.computerlanguage.com, and the home page of that site is downloaded to you. . Other features include an audio-based alarm that will send an alert based on a selected volume level.

The AXIS 230 will be available through Axis' distribution channels in the first quarter of 2004. The manufacturer's suggested retail price is $1,999.
