Axis Doubles Simulation Capacity and Offers Faster Turnaround Time With Incremental Compilation; Xcite Now Offers 20-Million Gate Capacity and Speeds Design Recompilation.

Business Editors & High-tech Writers

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 14, 2000

Axis Systems, Inc. (Axis), a supplier of the fastest Electronic Design Automation (EDA (1) (Electronic Design Automation) Using the computer to design, lay out, verify and simulate the performance of electronic circuits on a chip or printed circuit board. ) verification solutions, today announced a new version of Xcite(tm), Xcite-twinbox, with expanded simulation capacity and improved compilation performance.

Xcite incorporates Axis' proprietary ReConfigurable Computing See adaptive computing.  (RCC RCC - An extensible language. ) engine using Altera Corporation's (NASDAQ NASDAQ

) workstation. Each box has a capacity of up to 10-million ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) Pronounced "a-sick." A chip that is custom designed for a specific application rather than a general-purpose chip such as a microprocessor.  gates for a maximum design capacity of 20-million gates.

To reduce design iteration time, Xcite offers an incremental compilation feature, which automatically detects changes within the Xcite design database and minimizes changes to the affected PLD (Programmable Logic Device) Refers to a variety of logic chips that are programmable at the customer's site, the customer being the vendor of the finished chip, not the end user. (s). Only the changed PLD(s) is recompiled. For small design changes, such as adding or modifying combinational logic, this is usually one PLD, which makes the compilation turnaround time (1) In batch processing, the time it takes to receive finished reports after submission of documents or files for processing. In an online environment, turnaround time is the same as response time.  less than 30 minutes running on a single workstation.

Steve Wang, Axis vice president of marketing, remarked, "Our goal is to address the verification of multi-million gate designs, such as those used in networking and multimedia applications. Our customers asked us to increase Xcite's gate capacity compilation technology. This new version of Xcite is our answer to this request."

More about what's new

Xcite-twinbox offers a 20-million gate simulation capacity using two external peripherals or twin boxes. Previous versions of Xcite offered up to 10-million gates within a single external enclosure.

Xcite's design compiler allows design blocks to be compiled separately for faster simulation. For example, a 2-million gate design compiles in an hour running on ten workstations. The compiler offers incremental compilation so that changes made to the design or test benches take place in minutes and eliminates design re-compiles.

About Xcite

Xcite represents of a new class of design verification tools that take advantage of RCC co-processors coupled with functional verification and debugging software to improve design verification throughput by orders of magnitude over software-only simulators. Xcite addresses behavioral, RTL (Register Transfer Level) A high-level hardware description language (HDL) for defining digital circuits. The circuits are described as a collection of registers, Boolean equations, control logic such as "if-then-else" statements as well as complex event sequences;  and gate-level simulation and verification of million-gate plus designs.

Price and Availability

Xcite with incremental design compilation and the Xcite-twinbox is shipping now. The price is in the range of $0.09 to $0.15 per gate (USD USD
