]For its innovative technology and its ability to influence several market sectors, Axis Communications is presented with the 2005 Frost & Sullivan Excellence in Technology Award. This Award is presented each year to the company that has successfully developed a technology that can affect a market in terms of adoption, change, and competitive posture. E[acute accent]Axis developed the network dome cameras using its in-house chip technology to meet the demand for an IP network video solution. However, it first had to address the issues of excellent image quality and camera elements before it could launch the product in the market. E[acute accent]It tackled the first issue through superior digitization and compression of the image. Then it coupled its network video technology, including Axis' in house ETRAX networking chip and ARTPEC2 compression chip, to a Sony ExView HAD Camera Block to achieve optimal image quality, performance, and reliability. E[acute accent]The robust mechanics and design of the 231D and 232D enable the dome cameras to be utilized in the most demanding surveillance applications. The two network dome cameras can deliver simultaneous full frame rate motion JPEG See MPEG and JPEG 2000.

) image sensor," says Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Michael Valenti. "Axis engineers have provided each camera with four alarm inputs and four alarm outputs, advanced event management functions, and a range of security features including hyper text transfer protocol secure sockets (HTTPS (1) (HyperText Transport Protocol Secure) The protocol for accessing a secure Web server. Using HTTPS in the URL instead of HTTP directs the message to a secure port number rather than the default Web port number of 80. ) and IP address filtering." E[acute accent]As true dome cameras, 231D and 232D cameras can also execute a continuous 360 degree pan to efficiently cover large areas and follow moving objects. Operators can preset up to 20 positions and one sequence on auto patrol tour. E[acute accent]While both cameras provide high quality color video even in light that is as dim as 0.3 Lux, the 232D is a day-night camera that shifts to light-sensitive black and white video in low light conditions down to 0.005 Lux. E[acute accent]"The cameras function like an analog tilt and zoom, with up to 18X analog or standard film zoom, with the major difference that Axis integrates the functions that once required a video server into the same box," observes Valenti. "Everything that the camera does -- digitizing the images, controlling pan/tilt/zoom -- is done over the network, reducing cost, and by simplifying the design, lowering the possibility of malfunction." E[acute accent]Axis has started shipping its IP-based network dome cameras to educational, governmental, retail, and transportation end users through a distribution network. These systems are likely to enjoy immense popularity, as system managers can use the same IP/Ethernet networking equipment as well as standard PC servers. They are more cost-efficient, and yet, are more flexible and scalable than standard VCRs or DVRs. E[acute accent]Network cameras today provide the same or better functionality as analog cameras, and because of the improved cost efficiency, a network video system can often provide more cameras within the same budget, providing better coverage of the area under surveillance," notes Valenti. "Axis has emerged as the leading vendor of network video aimed at surveillance, security, remote monitoring, and applications, earning itself the Excellence in Technology Award."
