Axiom, Zaiya And Nippon Kayaku Enter Anti-Cancer Drug Discovery Research Collaboration.

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 19, 1997--

Axiom axiom, in mathematics and logic, general statement accepted without proof as the basis for logically deducing other statements (theorems). Examples of axioms used widely in mathematics are those related to equality (e.g.  Biotechnologies Inc. today announced that the company has entered into a joint drug discovery collaboration with Japanese biopharmaceutical company, Zaiya Inc. and Japanese pharmaceutical company, Nippon Kayaku Co. Ltd. to identify small molecule anti-cancer agents.

Under the terms of the agreement, Axiom will receive multi-million dollar research funding Research funding is a term generally covering any funding for scientific research, in the areas of both "hard" science and technology and social science. The term often connotes funding obtained through a competitive process, in which potential research projects are evaluated and  for three years, as well as license fees, milestone payments associated with major developmental achievements and royalties on sales of products developed under the collaboration.

The joint discovery program will leverage Axiom's proprietary drug discovery technologies to rapidly evaluate compound libraries to identify novel anti-cancer agents that selectively induce apoptosis apoptosis

assays that will be coupled to the company's High Throughput Pharmacology System (HT-PS) technology to accelerate the functional profiling of "hits" identified in the discovery program. Axiom will also optimize leads emerging from HT-PS assays using in-house drug optimization expertise.

Under the agreement, Nippon Kayaku will receive an exclusive license to develop, manufacture and sell drug candidates emerging from the discovery program in Asia and option to territories outside of North America North America, third largest continent (1990 est. pop. 365,000,000), c.9,400,000 sq mi (24,346,000 sq km), the northern of the two continents of the Western Hemisphere. . Zaiya will retain product rights in North America and plans to collaborate with Axiom to jointly secure a U.S. pharmaceutical development and marketing partner for these territories.

"This anti-cancer drug discovery program reflects the value achieved when proprietary molecular targets and functional assays are coupled to Axiom's High Throughput Pharmacology System and directed chemistry," said Pandi Veerapandian, Ph.D., Axiom's president. "We are very pleased to engage in a collaborative research program with such well-respected Japanese firms as Zaiya and Nippon Kayaku."

"This program is an exciting challenge to discover small molecule inhibitors to regulate protein/protein interaction, a program which requires creative drug discovery strategy," said Hiroki Yoshihara, president of Zaiya. "We believe Axiom's structural biology Structural biology is a branch of molecular biology concerned with the study of the architecture and shape of biological macromolecules—proteins and nucleic acids in particular—and what causes them to have the structures they have.  approach combined with functional cell-based assays is presenting one of most viable strategies for accelerated drug discovery in this program."
