Axemen take first seeding contest.

An unassisted goal by Nina DeHaas from 10 yards out in the 18th minute gave host South Eugene a 1-0 Midwestern League girls soccer victory over Springfield on Wednesday in the first of three seeding games for the state playoffs.

Jesslyn Rahm earned the shutout for the Axemen, who finished the league season unbeaten and now have outscored their opponents 46-2 this fall.

In the round-robin format among the league's top three teams, Springfield will now play at Churchill on Tuesday, and then the Lancers lanc·er

 Brabham scored two goals and Erin Lewis recorded her fourth league shutout as host Thurston blanked Lebanon 6-0 in the round-robin playoff to determine the final three spots in the Midwestern League.

Shalynn Pack, Kirsten Cardwell, Haley Brown and Kayla Stewart also scored for the Colts. Also figuring in the Marist team scoring were Kyle Jackson Kyle Jackson (born April 9, 1983, Litchfield, New Hampshire) is a Major League Baseball relief pitcher. Currently a member of the Boston Red Sox' 40-man roster, and playing for AA Portland Sea Dogs.  (11th, 17:00.5), Nick Dibos (15th, 17:11.3) and John Stahmer (16th, 17:18.4).

Rounding out Oakridge's scoring were Max Long (13th, 17:09.6), Jerome Freeman (14th, 17:10.6) and Jack Foster (26th, 17:53.1).

Girls cross country

The Marist girls rolled to an easy victory at the 12-team Elmira Invitational meet as five Spartans, led by Meghan Whalen, finished in the top nine among scoring teams at the Country Fair course.

Whalen was fourth for Marist in 19:01.5 to lead a pack of five Spartans among the next six finishers in the team scoring. She was followed by teammates Brenn Donnelly (fifth, 20:06.3), Melissa Greig (seventh, 20:24.0), Emery emery: see corundum.
