Class 4A girls basketball state playoffs open today with South Eugene, the No. 4 seed out of the Midwestern League, playing host to Tigard at 7 p.m.

4A GIRLS BASKETBALL

The Axemen (16-8 overall, 12-4 league) have won 11 of their past 12 games. Their only loss during that span was a 39-32 setback setback

 against conference champion Churchill.

Tigard (17-7, 10-6) finished in a three-way tie for second with Newberg and Silverton in the Pacific-9, but lost both tiebreakers.

`The most important thing for us is that we're playing well going into the playoffs,' South Eugene coach Jim Denker said. `Some teams are satisfied just to get there, but our kids are excited. They've worked very hard this season and dedicated themselves to getting better.'

Senior guard Camille Richey is the leading scorer for South Eugene at 15 points per game. The other Axemen starters are sophomore Sarah Whitfield, junior Taylor Woods, junior Amy Densmore and freshman Elyse Barnes. Key players off the bench include freshman Lacy Clark, junior Ricci Estey and junior Liz Johnston.

`We're playing with confidence, and we have a nice rotation going,' Denker said. `I think it's an advantage to be at home. If nothing else, it's a reward for the kids.'
