Lauren Tyree, Marianna Gordon and Caitlin Schauer scored 11 points each as South Eugene defeated visiting Crescent Valley 57-35 in a nonleague girls basketball game Thursday night.

The Axemen led 34-6 at halftime after holding the Raiders to five points in the first quarter and one in the second. Jenny Sibert led Crescent Valley with 10 points.

Mackenzie Rae scored 27 points and had five steals as Waldport recorded a 56-48 victory at Elmira.

Kasey Sconce had 11 points and Lindsey Dyer 10 for the Falcons, who outrebounded the Irish 31-16. Rae made all six of her free throws in the fourth quarter to help seal the win.

Ashley Lee scored 19 and Marcy Drake 13 as Sutherlin pulled away in the second half to beat host Coquille 64-45. Trinity Brady had 12 points to lead the Red Devils, who trailed only 35-31 at halftime.

Glendale rallied from a four-point deficit after three quarters to defeat Lowell 42-41 at the Oakridge Tournament.

Kandace Allen led the Pirates with 14 points and Randy Winkleman added 12. Glendale, which held a 20-19 halftime edge, was down 34-30 at the start of the fourth. The Devils were led by Aly Clark, who scored 11.

Ashley May scored 21 points and Shahna Ashard 18 to lead host Newport to its 51-36 victory over Pleasant Hill.

Danica Bates paced the Billies with eight points and four assists, but Pleasant Hill had 21 turnovers and trailed 25-13 at the half.

Boys basketball

Rusty Cottrell scored 13 points and Heath Johnson added 12, but it wasn't enough for North Eugene as the Highlanders fell to South Salem 71-53.

The Saxons outscored North Eugene 19-8 in the second quarter to turn a

two-point game into a 35-22 halftime lead. Mike Yeiter had 13 points to lead three South Salem players in double figures.

Ian Pinard scored 18 points in the first half, 22 total, and grabbed seven rebounds as Douglas downed visiting Hidden Valley 64-45. Chris Tessen paced the Mustangs with 14 points.

Lowell built a 27-14 halftime lead and held on in the second half to cruise to a 51-36 win against Glendale at the Oakridge Tournament.

Luke Harris scored 10 to pace the Devils, and Dan Lovemark had a game-high 19 points for Glendale.

Uni Prenevost had 18 points and Matt Pederson 11 to lead Oakridge back from a terrible first quarter, but the Warriors still lost 60-51 to Regis in the Oakridge tourney.

The Warriors trailed 26-6 after the opening quarter, but outscored the Rams 45-34 the rest of the way. Regis was led by Blake Muscardini, who had 18 points.

Boys swimming

Matt Devore and Patrick Naleway won two events each as South Eugene opened its season with an 109-46 victory against visiting Churchill in a Midwestern League meet at the Eugene YMCA.

Devore won the 200- and 500-yard freestyles, and Naleway took the 100 butterfly and 200 individual medley. Marcus Chan led the Lancers with wins in the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke.

North Bend put its depth on display against Thurston, sweeping the 11 events while producing only one multiple winner, Joseph Moyer, as the Bulldogs won at home 119-46.

Moyer won the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle. He also swam the final leg of the 200 medley relay.

Springfield won the final three events to upset defending district champion Sheldon 94-82 at the Willamalane Swim Center.

Tyler Stone won the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke for the Millers, and swam on their winning 400 freestyle and 200 medley relay teams. Trevor Olson led the Irish with victories in the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle.

Cottage Grove won all 11 events as the Lions defeated visiting Dallas 118-31 in a nonleague swim meet.

Cole Steely (100 breaststroke, 66 freestyle), Cory Cook (133 individual medley, 100 freestyle) and Alex Owre (200 freestyle, 100 medley) combined to capture six of the eight individual events for Cottage Grove.

Chris White, David Bauer, Kel Trebon and Ben Malcolm each won two events as North Eugene beat visiting Junction City 109-55 in a nonleague meet.

Those four individuals also combined to win the 400 freestyle relay. Malcolm, who won the district title last season in the 200 freestyle and was second in the 100 backstroke, won the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke on Thursday.

Girls swimming

Erika Wirth won two events in South Eugene's 109-46 victory against visiting Churchill.

Wirth, the defending district champion in the 50-yard freestyle and 100 butterfly, won both events against the Lancers. Andria Breeden won the 100 breaststroke and 200 freestyle for Churchill.

Jennie Rogers and Megan Masters won two events each as North Bend had no trouble defeating visiting Thurston 122-46.

Rogers won the 100 butterfly and 200 individual medley, and Masters was first in the 500 freestyle and 100 backstroke.

Defending district champion Sheldon opened its title defense with a 145-31 rout of host Springfield.

Laura Fay (200 freestyle, 100 butterfly) and Angela Fults (200 individual medley, 100 breaststroke) had multi-event wins for the Irish, and Stephanie Burton, the district champion in the 100 backstroke, won the 500 freestyle.

Cottage Grove, led by Kim Settelmeyer and Kristi Sharp, had no trouble turning away visiting Dallas 120-37.

Settelmeyer won the 100 backstroke and 133 individual medley, and Sharp won 100 breaststroke and 100 freestyle.

Strong performances by Amanda Hoffman, Kacie Hogan and Sarah Boam propelled North Eugene to a 104-75 nonleague victory against visiting Junction City.

Hoffman won the 50 and 100 freestyles, Boam the 100 butterfly and 200 individual medley, and Hogan the 200 freestyle and 100 backstroke. Lisa Shannon picked up the only individual victory for the Tigers, winning the 100 breaststroke.
