Byline: CURTIS ANDERSON The Register-Guard

The South Eugene girls basketball team celebrated its return to the postseason with a convincing 48-37 victory over West Albany on Thursday night.

`I'm glad for the kids,' South Eugene coach Jim Denker said. `They've worked hard for this, and they've earned everything they've got. I'm proud of them.'

and Marianna Gordon hit back-to-back threes and Lauren Tyree converted a fast-break basket to give South an 8-0 lead.

The advantage grew to 15-5 by the end of the first period and stood at 28-15 late in the first half before West Albany's Marisa Higgins buried a pair of long three-pointers to keep the Bulldogs within reach at the break, 28-21.

Higgins, a 5-foot-4 senior guard, scored 14 of her game-high 16 points in the first half, including four threes in the second quarter.

In the second half, however, South Eugene did a better job of checking Higgins as she managed just three shots and didn't score until a driving layup with 1:54 left in the game.

By then the outcome was no longer in doubt.

South extended a 28-23 advantage to 40-26 at the end of the third quarter by attacking the basket on offense and forcing the Bulldogs into 2-of-11 shooting.

`We made sure we identified where she (Higgins) was with our defense,' Denker said. `We wanted to stick close to her and not give her many looks.'

South's margin grew to as many as 16 points in the fourth quarter, and the final score was as close as West Albany would get for the rest of the game.

Gordon paced the balanced South offense with 15 points, followed by Tricia Flegal with nine and eight from Weaver. Erica Kilbourne grabbed six rebounds for the Axemen.

South Eugene was able to advance despite getting just two points from 6-foot senior post Bailey Stokes Stokes , William 1804-1878.
