) enterprise software and services, today announced the next generation of the Axeda Access(TM) application, a component of the Axeda DRM(TM) system. Axeda Access allows service and support personnel to use the Internet to remotely access and administer customer devices and software applications. This new release adds three new ways for service personnel to securely connect to applications behind customer firewalls: Remote Browser for embedded web servers Web server software embedded within a hardware device such as a print server. It is widely used in a myriad of devices, because it allows access to the software via any Web browser, typically for configuring the device or obtaining reports. See ETI and Web server. , Remote Terminal for character-based interfaces, and Remote Application for client-server architectures client-server architecture

. Manufacturers benefit from immediate access to their deployed products enabling more responsive customer service with reduced support call times, lower service travel costs, and new revenue-generating, managed-service opportunities.

"Service organizations require the ability to access software and devices from a distance for hands-on remote control and administration. It is imperative that this capability be part of a secure, managed environment where devices are known and users are authenticated au·then·ti·cate

," said Richard MacKeen, senior vice president of Research and Development at Axeda Systems. "This new release of the Axeda Access application lets customers select the best remote access tool for the job while operating within the advanced device management and security infrastructure of the Axeda DRM system. The result is an enterprise-class remote access environment that is capable of handling the needs of global service organizations."

Remotely Access, Administer, Assist

The enhanced Axeda Access application allows direct user accessibility to a wide variety of computer applications and allows users to control or troubleshoot the target software or device from their own desktop -- just as if they were on site. The new release, built on patent-pending Axeda Application Bridge(TM) and Firewall-Friendly(TM) technologies, broadens the types of applications and devices that can be remotely accessed and dramatically increases performance for users versus alternative products available today.
-- Remote Browser allows through-the-firewall access to devices and applications that have web browser-based user interfaces, without the security risk of making the web server public on the Internet.

-- Remote Terminal offers high performance access to devices with embedded operating systems such as UNIX(R) that utilize character-based terminal interfaces. Remote Terminal provides a browser-launched terminal emulator that connects a telnet session directly to the device, with the content of the session recorded for future reference and auditing.

-- Remote Application provides customizable access to a customer's unique console and diagnostic applications, where the connection between client and server is via TCP/IP sockets.

-- Remote Desktop provides full screen-sharing sessions with remote Microsoft Windows(R) or UNIX desktops, enabling remote administration or operator education. Remote Desktop control can be limited by requiring local operator permission and by making the session view-only.

Enterprise-class Security and Authenticated Communication

Since the Axeda Access application is Firewall-Friendly, all connections are secure and do not compromise the integrity of established customer firewalls. IT departments don't need to assign special IP addresses, reconfigure To change the status of something.  firewalls, or install direct telephone lines. All data passed between the computers is confidential and made secure with SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) The leading security protocol on the Internet. Developed by Netscape, SSL is widely used to do two things: to validate the identity of a Web site and to create an encrypted connection for sending credit card and other personal data.  authentication (1) Verifying the integrity of a transmitted message. See message integrity, e-mail authentication and MAC.

(2) Verifying the identity of a user logging into a network.
and encryption The reversible transformation of data from the original (the plaintext) to a difficult-to-interpret format (the ciphertext) as a mechanism for protecting its confidentiality, integrity and sometimes its authenticity. Encryption uses an encryption algorithm and one or more encryption keys. .

Further, the three new user interface methods are built on socket-based, Axeda Application Bridge technology. This architecture ensures that support personnel perform remote diagnosis and repair of devices using only the target application or device data required. This enables medical industry customers to more easily comply with HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act of 1996, Public Law 104-191) Also known as the "Kennedy-Kassebaum Act," this U.S. law protects employees' health insurance coverage when they change or lose their jobs (Title I) and provides standards for patient health,  (the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) was enacted by the U.S. Congress in 1996.

Because it is built on the Axeda DRM system that manages registered devices, the Axeda Access application eliminates the access control, inadequate auditing and security management issues associated with commercial desktop sharing See remote control software.  products, which require that every device be assigned a password and phone number. Advanced user security features ensure that:

-- Access sessions can only be initiated by authorized users authorized user Radiation physics A person who, having satisfied the applicable training and experience requirements, is granted authority to order radioactive material and accepts responsibility for its safe receipt, storage, use, transfer and disposal

permission

-- Detailed audit logs are available that track user, device,

duration and description of operations performed

Auditing and security features simplify compliance with the Code for Federal Regulations (CFR CFR

) Part 11, which requires that electronic records and transactions will be fully secure and auditable.

Axeda Access takes full advantage of the power and scalability of the underlying Axeda DRM platform and is also integrated into the Axeda Service(TM) application allowing field service and technical support personnel to quickly identify, diagnose and repair problems on remote devices.

About Device Relationship Management

Today's "intelligent" devices - such as medical instruments, computers and storage systems, printers and copiers, energy systems, building control units, and industrial equipment - are an important new source of business information. Device relationship management (DRM) systems allow companies to tap into valuable device performance and usage information any time, anywhere. Pioneered by Axeda, DRM technology provides a distributed information management system that leverages the Internet to allow timely, accurate and unbiased information to be communicated directly and automatically between remotely deployed intelligent devices and service personnel or enterprise business systems. DRM helps turn reactive businesses into proactive businesses operating with increased efficiency at lower costs and generating new sources of revenue, with an ROI (Return On Investment) The monetary benefits derived from having spent money on developing or revising a system. In the IT world, there are more ways to compute ROI than Carter has liver pills (and for those of you who never heard of that expression, it means a lot).  that is often measured in months.
