Few British companies are interested in participating in online trading communities An online trading community exists to provide its members with a structured method for trading, bartering, or selling goods or services. The study revealed that less than two thirds of UK companies had heard of the concept of an Internet marketplace See vertical portal and Web hub. , exchange or trading place while 80% had no plans to participate as buyers. However, the larger the business, the greater the awareness seemed to be. Awareness was also found to be higher in certain vertical markets such as banking and finance.

Despite the seemingly bleak outlook, 10% of the study's respondents said they planned to participate in an online trading community over the next twelve months. IDC expects the most aggressive growth to be in the transportation, telecomms, media and utilities sectors.
